I've been wanting to talk about this with fellow collectors for a while now, so I am posing the question here. What criteria do you go by to allow a figure into your collection?
I am very particular about my figures. They have to be in near perfect shape to make it into my collection. By this I mean tight joints and no paint wear. Some figures I will let in with minor paint wear, but even if I get a heavily worn figure that I didn't have in the "master" collection, he doesn't go in as a place holder. I'd rather have no figure than a crappy one.

I'm the opposite! I would certainly not pay full price on ebay for a figure with a broken thumb or crotch, but if I came across a figure I didn't have for 20 cents in a flea market I take it, and it can go into my collection until I find a fairer piece or in the case of Joe, make a good one out of two bad ones. I like the hunt and the bargain finds best - anyone with the right ammount of cash can just BUY entire collections in mint condition off of the bay for 5000 bucks but really, where's the FUN in that?

I do agree with you there - I enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Nothing like finding a Viper pilot with a near perfect Cobra symbol in a box of $0.50 figures. I will usually pick up the crappy figures if the price is cheap and they haven't seen too many battles.

I bought a big box of figures for the ridiculously low price of 15 euros, and I counted fifty figures from the picture - Corps and Joe - and when the package arrived it turned out to be over 100 figures, so 15 cents a piece, and one of them was a perfect condition Cobra Commander V1.5 swivel arm with helmet. There wasn't a scratch of paint missing and his limbs were super tight! Now that beats buying one for twenty bucks on Ebay!

Most of my toys as a kid weren't perfect, so a little paint flaw or missing hose doesn't bother me. I'm really relaxed about my joes, especially since getting a few Indian and Argentine Joes and seeing how dodgy the qc was on those guys. I can replace O rings & screws, and tighten up joints, so why place a bonus on that? And the most mangled figs usually inspire my best customs.
Other toys are pretty much the same story, with the exception of Chogokins, I can be a little anal about condition when it comes to shiny metal robots.

I can definitely see where paint wear would come into play big time with shiny metal robots. Most of the loose joints that I hate are the shoulders and elbows. I know you can clear coat the shoulder and knee joints to tighten them up, but I don't know of a way to tighten up the elbows. Maybe I'm just too anal about the condition of my figs.

The only trick I've ever heard for elbows (bicep swivel) is my own discovery: teflon tape (i.e. plumber's tape). Costs about a dollar at hardware stores. slide a litle piece in a loose swivel joint and wind it up. any excess can be trimmed with a razor/xacto Welcome to the board, btw! And here's a good example of why most flaws don't scare me: On the right is my Action Force Dolphin that I snagged off ebay for about $20, iirc. He had no accs and was missing his L leg at the knee. Bazooka's from an accessory pack, helmet and leg are fortunate paint matches (Krylon fusion - no chips!!!). Perfect piece for my collection, and a great price, too!

That's awesome man! Those are sweet looking, and you did a nice job on Dolphin. I'll definitely remember the teflon tape trick - as they say on the Guiness commercials - BRILLIANT!

I am pretty fussy about paint and so on when considering Joes.
I hate the cracked elbow snydrom...thunmbs, crotches, and heels are all obvious but I bought many a figure in mint condition, supposable, only to find the dreaded cracked elbow!!!!!
The worst cracked elbow figure ever was Charbroil...has was super hard to find without cracked elbows...followed closely by PP Tele Viper!
Worst broken crotch goes to Beachhead.
Worst broken heel goes to Steeler.
Worst broken thumbs goes to Zap.

I can't tell you how many Beachhead figures I have seen with broken crotches. He is by far the worst.

Geez, I've noticed that too! Half the Beachheads on eBay have a broken crotch. I'm very picky about my Joes, more so than any other line by far. I see every missing spec of paint .

I hate the cracked elbow snydrom...thunmbs, crotches, and heels are all obvious but I bought many a figure in mint condition, supposable, only to find the dreaded cracked elbow!!!!! That is a painfully true statement. I just bought a "mint" Storm Shadow that really is very nice looking aside from the cracked right elbow. Never mentioned in the description & not visible in the pic. Geez! The messed up part is (big surprise) the seller "never noticed" the flaw, and is assuming zero responsibility. Hopefully the lack luster cast at PeePal will "help remedy" this situation. Once again, all I did was pay instantly, get charged double the shipping cost, and yet again receive something in less than the stated condition. You'd think I'd be used to it by now, but I can't help but be slightly pissed every time it happens. All I ever expect from a seller is accuracy, communication, & proper shipping. Apparently that's still too much.

Elbows are a tough flaw to spot. Earlier this year I found one of the tops on my want list, Starduster, nearly complete with jetpack, helmet w/star, gun, and an uncut filecard at a toy show. No visor, no biggie, I can paint one black (and I did!). Seller described him to me as mint (and he looked it, I examined him in his little baggie). It wasn'y until the next day when I was setting my new toys up that I noticed it: cracked across the R elbow. I can't say I blame the seller in my case, I looked at it a dozen times before I saw it, but for some reason, this one particular flaw bugs me. Starduster stands there on his perch, flanked by steel brigadiers, Super Trooper, and other mail-aways, clutching his gun for all he's worth in his broken arm...

I understand. "Little things" like that bug the hell out of me too. To the point of near obsessive behavior. Like if I stare at the flaw hard enough, it will go away or something. What can I say? I'm you're typical OCD fueled collector.

Flaws that bother me are missing thumbs, and broken crotches/heels. Paint does not bother me if it is minor wear. Someday I want to buy everything on card and open them all up!!! I guess that is called heaven, or Shupes collection. LOL

I thought the elbows were supposed to have that crack. Because all my Joes do.

Those elbow cracks must be really microscopic, then. I never noticed any of my joes having them at least. I hate broken crotches, an thumbs are a bummer but I can live with them being gone....wouldn't throw a figure away because of it at least

Don't get me wrong Ghoul, I would not throw any figures away and I do allow some thumbs to be missing if the figures are old or rare. Still bugs me a bit.

Ah, you should see the condition my old Cobra Commander 1.5 was in! broken crotch, massive discolouration, helmet's silver painted over multiple times to cover up the wear on it, and the Cobra logo virtually gone. Still have it though, since it's the one I got when I was a kid and even though the Commander I have now is really in mint condition, I still keep my old tattred one for memories.

I wouldn't throw mine away either. Though A cool way to break them if you want is...hold Duke in your fist upside down with his legs sticking out the top, just above the knee. Push hard with your thumb, front to back or side to side, whatever you prefer. The legz'll break right off at the knee. Let out a good muffled scream. Then you can have all the other Joes get all blubbery about how he's in a coma. It's so much fun.

I have to say that cracked elbows were not something I started noticing (both as a buyer and a seller) until about a year or so ago. I do know that most eBay sellers aren't collectors and thus don't look for something that small. The should notice the busted thumbs/crotches as those are hard to miss.

Is there any CREATURE in the G.I.Joe line? You know, like dogs, horses, monsters, anything? Because the only Joes I would allow in my collection are the CREATURES.

Really? Man, that's a lot! But how come so many G.I.Joe figures were released, and in such a long time?

So, GI Joes are like Star Wars: so many figures released in so much time, you cannot count them anymore. Great. But by the way, Dfunk7, you said "our country", talking about the States. But I'm Canadian. So, I can't be 100% informed about what is released or not across the division line...

I'll keep a Joe in my collection if it has wear and such not a big deal to me. Any with broken parts go into a special bag with a bunch of spare O-rings and such for the day I find the replacement part for them. The last year of Joes I am usually interested in is about 1992 though I do have a some from the next few years that I have come across.

No broken crotches or thumbs allowed. Paint wear and cracked elbows are OK, as well as weapons pack accessories sometimes.

I take anything and everything. Broken, chipped, cracked, worn paint, you name it. This and Lords of Light are probably the only lines I can say this for. They are just so nicely made I can't bring myself to get rid of any of it unless in a trade. Of course I prefer ones in better condition though.
