I'm not sure if "DIY" is a company name or manufacturer...obviously, it often stands for "do it yourself". Anyway, no matter what this DIY company seems to be putting out some pretty neat cheap-o toys. I have yet to see any at retail (like at some dollar store or pharmacy), but I've noticed they put out some fantasy characters, ancient warriors, pirates, video game character knock offs and more. I picked up two sets of dragon figures recently.
Here is a set of six smaller dragon toys called "My Super Dragons: Tyrannosaurus Series". Odd name, but not as odd as "Beast Angle Gladiator"! Anyway, I remember seeing what I assumed were ripoffs of the Mega Bloks mini plasma egg dragons a few years back. I used to have a bunch of those, but never picked up the KO/bootlegs.
Each box contains on dragon figure you put together yourself. I'd wager this might be the implication of the "DIY" but not all of their toys are buildable. I'm not sure why they tacked on "Tyrannosaurus Series". My guess is that it was some translation thingie...I dunno.
Each box has instructions for the build...as if you can't figure it out. On the back is an illustration of all the six small dragons.
Basically, all the same construction. A main body with tail, four limbs, a head, and a set of wings. I no longer own any of the mini plasma egg dragons Mega Bloks made, but the wings are probably bootlegged from them. AND...I'm betting the body and limbs were bootlegged from Mega Bloks' plasma egg dinosaurs. I think I once owned two or three, but can't remember which ones. I think the heads are all-new. Basically, any help on confirming my suspicions is appreciated!
I recommend taking care when popping limbs on. Some attach smoothly, while others take some effort. These are kinda cheap, so you might snap a peg or something! The wings all seem to be the hardest to get on straight. You kinda need to force 'em a bit on every dragon.
Quality-wise, they aren't too bad. I really wish I could find stuff like this in a dollar store instead of the same old crap I usually find (and don't buy). The paint jobs are glossy. Very similar to Beast Angle Gladiator in that that look a tad cruddy...like melted crayon, almost. Generally, neat little guys.
Here is a size comparison with a TRU True Legends figure. I'm a fan of Chap Mei figures, but cut my collection down to "fantasy" themed characters (medieval, sword-n-sorcery...that bit). I've been keeping my eyes peeled for any 3 3/4 inch scale figures to go with 'em since output of that stuff seems to be slow goin'! These suckers fit the bill as add-ons to my collection.
Here's another set of DIY dragon figures. Larger that the My Super Dragons figures, and only four in the set.
These are skeletal dragons. Obviously, one can pretend these are some kind of undead fiends summoned by some necromancer. Main title for these is simply "REVIVE".
There seems to be two subsets to Revive. Here's the simple Dragon Skeleton side. These seem to be four-legged. Both have the same body with different head sculpts and colors.
The other set is the Jurassic Series and contains two "sabre-toothed pterosaurs". These appear to be two-legged with smaller front arms. Again, each shares a body sculpt with a different head and coloration.
Some other angles of the packages. Like the smaller fleshy dragons, these have instructions on the carton. A bit more complicated, but not difficult. I'm not sure if these got bootlegged from any other source or not. Totally original? No clue.
There they are, all built. Again, these guys are a tad more complex than the My Super Dragons, but a bit cleaner looking. They don't have that "sticky" look to them. Probably because there aren't as many paint apps on them. Cool to use as undead monsters. I almost wish they'd have added some strips of rotted flesh to the main bodies!
Parting shot of the a Revive dragon alongside a My Super Dragon and a True Legends orc figure. I think this company may have had a hand in another line of larger, fleshier dragon figures called "Dragons of the Dark" which is also a buildable figure series. I did spy one of the dragons in another DIY figure series called "Wrestling the Beast", so they may be all connected. I really have to get some pics of the Dragons of the Dark up eventually...but Wrestling the Beast also includes a cyborg tyrannosaurus, a mutant gorilla, and a demonic bat as well as a dragon!
