God Damn it! I can't stand convention exclusive figures! Why do toy makers screw with collectors like that. One of my Holy Grails is a G. I. Joe Roddy Piper which was a 2007 Convention Exclusive. It's a good chance I will never own one, because it fetches such a high price as it is collectable to G. I. Joe fans & wrestling fans, and I am both.
I don't know what they sell for at the convetions, but after it's over, the price will skyrocket, as it is no longer available to the public.
Over the weekend, I went on a G. I. Joe buying frenzy to find some of my old beloved figures. I went to YoJoe.com, to see who I am forgetting and stumbled upon another cool convention exclusive set I would love to own, 2004 Convention Exclusive Dreadnok Rampage set. The Dreadnoks are my favorite G. I. Joes I ever owned, Monkeywrench being #1 for me. It features some repainted figures of Ripper, Road Pig, Zarana and others, but what I really want are the 2 new Dreadnoks, Demolisher & Crusher. I immediately recognized them as Sagat & Zangief respectively with new bodies. Demolisher has Sagat's head with Steam Roller's repainted body & Crusher has Zangief's head with Gnawgahyde's repainted body. Another love of mine was Street Fighter (before my friend burned me out of it) and my 2 favorite fighters happen to be Sagat & Zangief and again, these 2 will be hard to track down with a decent price.
WHY, OH WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Anybody else despise this trend of Convention Exclusives that jack up the prices for limited cool figures?

In the last 48 hrs i have gone through the EXACT same torment (albeit to a lesser degree) over the exact same set. Specifically i've been considering jumping back into O-ring ARAH joes and in order to help me decide if i wanted to or not i took a look at Yojoe.com and came across Demolisher (amongst a hand full of others i like).
Crap.
So here i am ...not sure if i want to jump back into o-ring joes and i find a joe who compels me to search for him only NOT to find him at all and to discover he was a convention exclusive lol. Could i make a Demolishor with the right parts? Sure. Will I? Probably not . And because of the fact that the o-ring joes i want arent the easiest to find i'll probably admire joes from a distance and through watching the old cartoon episodes every so often.

I considered making Demolisher with Sagat & Steam Roller, but Sagat doesn't have the typical screw opening in the middle of the back like the other Joes. Is there anyway of opening up Sagat's torso without breaking it?
Also, are there any other figures you guys would wish weren't convention exclusives from other lines?

Boil and pop my friend Submerge Sagat up to his neck in hot water (i prefer boiling but to each their own) for roughly 20-45 seconds and then pull the head from the torso . If you are concerned with the metal t-bar rusting or other issues associated with water then use a hair dryer to the same effect.

Ouch! Is there any permanent damage doing that? Also, does that work for MotU KOs, too?

Actually, to be honest, I kind of dig them (SDCC and NYCC exclusives anyway). I'm really into packaging art and it's always super unique, and they make some ultra cool figures for SDCC (the 19" Galactus, the DCUC Plastic Man, The Starro talking box set, etc.). The thing with me is I usually pre buy from someone going to the con, or I wait til they inevitably show up on Mattycollector or Hasbrotoyshop.com. It's usually the scalpers that jack the prices up afterwards, the price of the toys AT the con seem to be fairly reasonable to me, at least for what I've purchased in tha past (JLU Giganta, Mighty Muggs Iron Man and Peter Parker, Starro box set, Wonder Woman Hot Wheels invisible plane, SHS Mayor 3 pack, etc.) Plus they don't make nearly as many, so I can understand why they have to raise the price to justify man hours, cost of research, new packaging, new scuplts, etc. If I was a completist, then it would probably drive me crazy, but I'm not except for on some vintage lines, so I enjoy seeing what cool stuff comes out every year.

When my little sister turned 25 I bought her a comic con exclusive pony. Was rather expensive, and cost around 100usd incl. shipping. It still had the box and the baggie was not opened. This is not my picture but it's the same horse. I'm not sure what they did cost at comic con 2007 but these are rather rare, and not living in US makes pretty much all these exclusives rather hard to get..

I have nothing but hate for convention exclusives...absolute HATE. Pretty much anything exclusive, really. Club and conventions are the worst exclusives though because of both price and availability, which kinda go hand-in-hand anyway.
To me, if you make an exclusive for a toy line...make it kinda "mild" so that the few folks that go to a convention get a little sumpin' sumpin'...and the many who can't go aren't too burned up. I hate the modern trend of making outstanding con exclusive toys and even whole sets that make collectors drool. Why bother? The only ones making out are the collectors that sell 'em on the secondary market, right? Case in point (and it's also a GI Joe example): the latest Oktober Guard set from 2012...ARGH! So cool! And the add-on extras and vehicles they made to go with it! Also ARGH!

i hate convention exclusives and they have an amazing ability to usually pick one of my absolute most wanted characters to make exclusives. i keep telling people that when the gijoe 25th line ended there were 5 characters that i wanted that had not been made. of those 5, 4 have been made in the last couple years and they have all 4 been exclusives. the only joes i have been interested in the last 6 or so years have all been stupid exclusives.
that roddy figure went up way faster than most of the con figures i buy on the secondary market. i got the demolisher and most of the other noks from that set about 6 years ago and at that time they were actually pretty easy to find and pretty cheap, have no idea about them now.

The thing I like that Matty and HTS does is put the leftovers on the websites after SDCC and NYCC. Also, they have versions that are a little different package or accessory wise, that you can get on their site after the con for normal price (like the Marvel Universe Galactus in a box instead of a gigantic card at SDCC). I mean, I spent like $10 presale on my Hot Wheels Wonder Woman plane, I think I spent $30 on Giganta, $30 on the 2 mighty muggs, but they all rose drastically in value after the convention.

That's the problem that I have. The figures are awesome. I don't hate the figures themselves, but the idea of making the exclusive, that's what I hate. There are few of them, henceforth makes them expensive. Currently on eBay, Demolishor is in the price range of $59.99 to $95.99, between one complete & no ID and one complete with ID. Quite a lot for a single figure. Crusher is currently at $29.99 to $59.99, between one with no accessories and one incomplete accessories with ID. I'd hate to bite on these figures, but I will eventually, I have a feeling.

This is one of the many reasons I' ve gone cold on Marvel Universe figures lately, I"m a bit upset that I wasn't able to score a Radioactive Man from the SDCC exclusive set they have. I can live without Tiger Shark or Baron Zemo but come on not Radioactive man.
Some examples of convetion exclusives I thought were pretty cool where Marvel Universe Composite Hulk and that Black and White Captain America, not unique figures I can only get at inflated prices boo to that.

i would love a modern version of the demolisher figure.

I think Demolishor is more expensive because he is a completely new figure, not counting that his head is taken from Sagat. Crusher would be the next because he is another new character, but borrows so much of his look from Gnawgahyde, his price is just below Demolishor. (The reason he looks like Gnawgahyde is explained in the file card. It is suspected he killed Gnawgahyde during a hunting expedition or something like that) The rest are priced a little lower, because they are already introduced and are only color swaps of previous versions, not to mention one too many of the similar looking Dreadheads.
I will admit, I did manage to get both Demolishor & Crusher complete with file cards, but it cost me. I also had gotten just one of the Dreadheads, because one is good enough since they are all basically the same guy. I got Roscoe, because I love Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles. Great food. I still would like to get the rest of the Dreadnoks, though.
My quest still continues to collect G. I. Joes, I had gotten other exclusives from other years, but the wallet is hurting and it's begging me to stop. I just wish they didn't do these things.
