I assume these designs represent their "protoforms" - what the Transformers look like before they choose Earth modes. They transform from entry mode to robot mode.
OPTIMUS PRIME
"Summoned by a signal from one of his gravest warriors, Optimus Prime thunders down through the space above Earth and races into battle, his protoform body tracing a fiery path across the sky. Most powerful among the Autobots, he is dedicated to the recovery of the Allspark, and the protection of both humans on Earth and his own people back on Cybertron. Scanning an Earth truck, he morphs into a form that will allow him to hide until the time comes to enter battle against Megatron!"
STARSCREAM
"One of the most dangerous creatures in the galaxy, Starscream commands the Decepticon search for the Allspark while Megatron is missing. Streaking towards Earth, he reshapes his body, morphing his metal skin into a protective shell that glows and sparks as he makes fiery descent. On Earth, he will scan a disguise and modify his protoform into an Earth fighter jet form that allow him to achieve his goal: the total destruction of the Autobots."

So, what do you think? I got the images from a Japanese collectors' site. I think they're pretty cool looking, but I'm most looking forward to seeing Bumblebee as a yellow version of the new Camaro concept and Optimus as a flaming Peterbilt. From what I understand, the new Mustang will also show up as a Police car decepticon and Megatron will be back as a tank.

Thanks for the pics. I've not been following news of the movie much but I'm not to sure what to make of these I actually quite like the look of Prime as a stand alone toy, if I saw it loose on a shelf I may well pick it up, but it just doesn't look like Optimus Prime to me. Same with Starscream, although I'm less keen on the design as well.

I hope these pics were of the "before versions" of the transformers and after they get to earth they become more like the one's we know and love but if that doesn't happen then they are pretty much average at best......

Those are the 'before' pics, but from what limited pics I've now seen of the 'after' versions it doesn't get much better It's all a little to organic looking, nothing like the G1 TF designs unless you count the paint jobs.

i have really been turned off the TF line entirely because of the disintergrating production value and expoding price tag. the last TF i bought (after a lot of fighting with my sence of reason)was the alternators Sion figure...35$ and i had to pin the arms...out of the box. i need two things from the movie line 1) scale, it would be nice if the figures were to scale with each other 2) some metal, or at least not a "broken out of the box" plastic
the long and short...im probly only going to get the tank
thanks for the pics though ;D

I haven't bought a TF new for years, although I have picked up some more recent ones second hand. I am tempted by the Classics Grimlock though, and the new Megatron Masterpiece looks interesting (but I'll wait for the painted pics and reviews, MP Starscream looked interesting for a while but in the end was a let down for me)
I doubt the movie toys will have any metal content and TF's have never really been any good for scale.

I really thought these designs would pay some hommage to the look of the originals. I'm sorry to see that's not the case. I hate the over-articulated, organic look for TFs. They're supposed to be klunky robots. That was half the visual appeal!
