I remember always reading the books as a kid and like the look of these guys. They were released in the early 1980s in Europe I believe. Would be cool to have a large setup with all the the little sets and such. Anyone collect these guys?

Being from the Netherlands, where Asterix is a household brand, they were pretty much everywhere and it is certainly a line I collect. I have a couple, but not nearly all that were made.
The real bitch about these is finding them complete or even with their helmets. Asterix' helmet alone is horrible, since his trademark feathers were pinned to his helmet but they did not hold to the pins properly, they fell off so easily and the helmets themselves didn't really FIT on the heads, they just fell off at the slightest touch with nothing to hold them in place.
The helmets are such an integral part of the figures, though, it's hard to imagine them without it. Why the choice was made to include those helmets loose without any form of proper support is a good question.

I still have some half broken figure from my youth, a Obelix, some Gaul and many parts. I live in Quebec and they used to be found around, but they were pretty scarce as I recall.
The figure were pretty cool since they had mounds of accessories. But like ghouldrool point out, they're a heck to found complete or unbroken.

I am a huge fan of Asterix the Gaul. When i was younger my brother had a Centurion figure, he bought it at a store that had them all on clearance. At the time i wanted some GI Joes. Looking back now i would have bought Obelix and any others rather than Joes that are easily found today. I have a box set of the cartoon films, 6 of them as well as an individual dvd of Asterix meets Cleopatra (which is included in the boxset as well) but with different artwork. Growing up in Scotland i used to watch Asterix as well as Tintin.

Ooh, now that you mention it, I had a great find of Asterix toys at a local church bazaar. I found a box full of odds and ends (original box, mind you) and when I was finished, this is what I had: I adore the little ship and the cottage. I have a couple of figures more that I haven't pictured yet, including my favorite, Assurancetourix the bard. I believe the English call him Kakafonix, but I like the original names better

I am more than jealous of this find. My son is 4 and he loves the Asterix cartoons. I am currently trying to find him some Asterix toy to play with but it is really difficult in Texas to find any. Back in Scotland i would probably have an easier time of it.
