I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are on modern action figure lines. Do you collect only vintage, only modern, or a mixture of the two? What's right or wrong about modern figure lines? I'll happily mix it up, but while I collect various modern robots (SOC, Senati/Power Ranger, etc) and vinyl toys (Ultraman, Godzilla, etc) I don't seem to find many actual action figure lines that capture my imagination. I've bought various bits and pieces from a bunch of modern lines over the years, but while I like some of the individual toys, I've not been inspired to collect more. I don't quite know what it is, just some kind of spark is missing

The only modern line I collect is Star Wars (But Original trilogy only). I decided about a year ago to focus my time & money on vintage stuff, which is what I really love. I collected LOTR when it came out & the new MOTU line but that's about it. I will be getting those new GI Joe 25th anniversary figures when they come out though. Has anyone seen these yet? They're really sweet.

I don't touch modern at all. Its not that I don't like whats out there its that I don't have the room for anything else other than my vintage collection. One of the things i don't like about many modern lines out there is the over articulation of a figure. It just makes it look like a statue and not a toy.

I've no problem with a well articulated figure if it's done like Microman or most Marvel Legends (or those new Joes). It's the stuff that has a lot of joints, but is molded in such a way that it only looks good in one pose, like most Mc Farlane and the recent BOTP figures

They're really sweet. That is much like me. I collected a bit the 2002 relauch of Masters of the Universe and a bit of LOTR. I occasionally buy some Star wars stuff and keep an eye on horror figure (just bought the NECA Hannibal Lecter, sweet stuff). Beside an occasionnal Sideshow 12" based upon a movie I love and ovesized or regaular movie figure by NECA and McFarlane I don't dig new line much. I much more appreciate stuffi could have gotten or actually had as a kid. I often star up vintage collection upon the toys I have left from my childhood. I recently sell off a bunch of more recent stuff as I find that darn soft rubber and plastic hair, fabric and other stuff will age horribly. I had these very beautiful Palisades Star Trek figure but just flet these soft rubber clothes were to unglue, dry up or worse in a mather of years. Such matrial turn me off from many newer line. It may be just me freaking out, but I don't like this stuff. I love old style, big plastic toys. With die-cast it's even better!

For a while, I considered collecting some modern lines, but a few things turned me off. one, they put out so many of the line, that it becomes such a chore to go get them all. Like Marvel legends. there's what, 15 series or something now? It's insane. Way too many to collect and keep up with. And it's generally like that with all the major modern lines. LOTR has a ton that were put out. Star wars continues to come up with new stuff to blanket stores with. I like what they come out with, but it's just too much. Plus, the cost of getting all this stuff would be a lot to add, considering the cost of vintage stuff is already fairly high. It's a combination of all these issues, that makes it so hard for me to get into the new lines. They are nicely done though, I have to admit that many of the modern lines that have come out like MOTU, LOTR, Marvel stuff, etc, they all look great!!! It is cool to see the old vintage lines given the modern touch. Really brings those old characters to life, and gives them some cool looks. But, size of collection, cost, and lack of space really make it hard nowadays to collect this stuff.
One of the things I have been looking at collecting, is the 15th anniversary joes. However, I have the gut feeling, that it will do so well, that they will start blanketing us with more than the 25 figures they are saying they will make. Then it will just become a huge new line, that goes way overboard, and it will end up turning me off, because i won't finish out the line.

Good points treckmeyer, indeed some line are just too large to collect, often at price that are higher per figure than vintage ones. I recently started checking the G.I. Joe Sigma 6 figure. They're ppretty cool and I almost get tempted, but heck, looking at online store when i figured out the kept coming but the truckload I backed off!
For some movie figure it still fine, but again cool, short and overall easy to collect line at a fair price are harder to come by.

I notice the modern line is more difficult to sale around here. I took a look at the modern trademarket and I dont see too much interest. LOL

Modern toylines for the most part, just aren't cool, in my opinion. Most are just rehashes of existing toylines and characters. Barely anything new comes out nowadays, and the real market for awesome toys is usually when a cool new cartoon or character gets introduced. Hopefully the next gen of kids get the same kind of toys that us 80s children grew up with.

I agree with a lot of what's already been said:
I like posability, like LOTR or Marvel Legends, and hate 'inaction' figurines like Spawn.
Oversaturation can kill my interest, too. I was never into Star Wars and can only shake my head when I hear/read about some SW completists' plight about tracking down a hundred or more toys every year. I'm afraid the 25th Joes are headed that way, too. In the first 25 figs, 5 are snake-eyes or Storm Shadow. Even with the LOTR, I only need one Gimli, or one Frodo, not a dozen.
What modern stuff I do collect, I force myself to be selective. Like Marvel Legends, Captain America: Buy, any Xmen:pass. I'm hardly a completist on anything.
Other brands/lines I'll always trust: Lego(always buying old and new) and Bandai(especially SOC). Both companies make fun, sturdy toys and I've had good experiences with service from them as well. Compare that to Hasbro, enemy of collectors, and their sketchy quality control, affinity for exclusives and repaints, and piss-poor customer service.

Only a few of the newer stuff catches my eye. I pick up a few here and there that catch my eye. I really like the Jakks Classic Superstars line. One of the best out there. Starting to get into the Yamato Batman Line and have always liked DC Direct figs. Other than that.........Im a classic person. Give me a John Blackstar before a Hasbro Marvel Legend any day. There are alot of promising looking lines coming out..............but nothing can take the place of buying the toys you had as a kid. Brings back those memories.

I am not a completist with Modern stuff,
I will buy stuff that I like, but that is it.
They just do not snag my interest like the classics do.
