I recently bought an early 80's toy from a flea market that was MOC for $1. The card itself was in really bad condition. Card was bent, plastic bubble was yellowed and card was actually chewed by what looked like mice lol. I decided to open the toy since I had it when I was a child and wanted to reminisce a little and put batteries in it, hoping it would function. So I opened the package carefully and put batteries in: Voila, it worked. So after getting that out of my system I decided I wasn't really that attached to the toy. So my question is this: Should I sell the toy as mint with all the parts and booklet inside without the packaging or risk selling the yellowed, mouse eaten card and grossing someone out who otherwise would want the toy? I am pretty new to selling and would appreciate any advice as I really have no clue which option would be more desirable to someone who would want to buy the thing.

Sell it as complete without the backing card if it's absolutely gross. But if it's eve half way decent I'd throw it in and mention that it's destroyed. What's the figure?

Thank you for the reply! It's not actually an action figure, that's why I didn't specify in the first post but if you ask it's a "Stomper" car (if you remember those). It's the Subaru Brat. I was just figuring that the question was relevant since the conundrum would transfer over to action figures. I don't really have any interest in collecting cars, hence my willingness to sell. If it were an action figure I most likely would have held onto it and I definitely would not have opened it lol (unless it was something I had growing up). If you would like a pic I would be more than willing to post it, I just don't know how to on these forums thus far.

A beat up card is worthless to any collector. You only spent a $1.00 and by opening up you can get more in this case it sounds like. On the other hand a lot of people like buy on a beat up card so they can be the one who opens it, but it just really matters what figure it is. You could sell it loose & looking pretty, and just throw in the card as an unmentioned 'bonus'. By the sounds of things it will appear more appealing loose.

Ok, cool. Yeah, I had never opened an old toy like that before and it was a bit of a rush so I didn't really regret doing it. Not a real high ticket item anyways. Nice to hear that it was not necessarily a real bonehead move lol.

I say sell it loose and just throw in the card with it when you ship it out. I remember those Stompers quite well. They were a ton of fun.
I was in a similar predicament as you a few years ago. At a flea market I picked up a GI Joe RAH Mean Dog in the original box though the box had water damage and had sand in it. It only cost me $10. I was torn as to what to do with it so I said F-it and opened the box and put the toy together, stickers and all. It was a blast and totally worth it. I kept the figure sealed and stored all the paperwork and file card. I debated keeping the box but it was too far gone so I tossed it. When I sold it at a show last year the buyer was so impressed with the condition and got a kick out of the story and said he would have done the same thing.

I have a situation like this also. I have 4 of the Power Lords mini PVC figures, excellent condition, loose. I just won Sydot, the 5th one, off Ebay, carded, but the card isn't in the greatest condition. I would like to open it to display with the others, but then, it's a pretty rare find period, especially carded, so I'm not sure what to do with it. I might just pin the card to the wall behind the shelf I have the loose figures on...

I would say open it, many of the carded Power Lords you see around these days have fairly damaged cards. I heard their was a warehouse find of sorts lately in the UK with a bunch of carded Power Lords so their are a number of them floating around from the last few years. I had a few carded ones with yellowed bubbles and bent cards, opened them and have no regrets. They look way better loose on a shelf, you can always keep the card to display behind the figures.

Yeah, but I think these are rarer than the regular Power lords figures, no? (the little 2inch or so non articulate PVC figures in the pic below). Probably not as expensive, but I hardly ever see these compared to the regular line. I've only seen em carded one other time, all of them, 6 cards (since Adam Power was packaged front and back) and the cards were pretty beat, the guy wanted $400 on a buy it now. I don't know if they ever sold or not at that price...I wish it was Shayra or whatever her name is that was the carded one, since she won't stand on her own whatsoever, I have her leaned against another figures arm to hold her up. The sword/outstretched hand makes it too top heavy.

Are those bendies? Regarding damaged MOC figures, usually if its something that you know you arent gonna get rid of i say open it and display it with the rest. The fiigure is almost always real nice looking. This was one of those instance when just taking it off the card was better since it was in 'nasty' condition.

No, they're hard plastic. I wish they were bendies, I'd make it so Shaya could stand up..lol

i personally love getting a figure on a ruined card and getting to open it knowing it wont have any play wear. Me too!!!!! I think AD&D is the best line for this. For some reason the bubbles in this line are terrible. But that makes it super easy to get nice minty figures for cheap. My mercion, melf and Northlord were all from horrible cards and completly yello bubbles. Now they stand minty fresh on my shelf looking around at my toy world like patients after a double cataract operation (I can see, I can see!!) ;D

@80's action figures, yeah, I've noticed that, seems like a ton of carded AD&D figures have yellow/discolored bubbles.

I ended up going ahead and opening my Sydot PVC. I almost never open vintage carded figures, but the card was beat down and I have all the rest loose like I said. Usually, I don't like opening a carded example because I almost feel as if I'm ruining a part of history, like, if I want a loose one, I'll find a loose one in good condition, I like to save the carded examples for their card art and the fact that if I ever sell them, there's not one less carded example out there..Weird, I know. lol

Don't get too depressed man. Just think of it like you are on an archaeological dig and are entering a sealed chamber or something that has been closed off for centuries! Is that ruining history?
