The gi joe action figures date back all the way to the 1960’s. The term G.I stands for the word government issue and has always been a term used by the US armed forces. Based on the popular cartoon series, the gi joe action figures represent the main divisions of the US armed forces. The main segments that are depicted through the figures consist of an Action Soldier (army), Action Marine (marines), Action Sailor (navy) and an Action Pilot (air force). The gi joe action figures are considered to be the fathers of the phrase ‘action figure’.

Sorry, I originally made a reply about 1980s gi joes. I didn't look close enough to see that your thread is about 1960s figures. My mom acquired one when her little brother didn't want it anymore. She showed it to me and I was impressed by the cool flocked hair.
A few years ago, Hasbro sold some re-makes of those old toys. They came in a retro style box. I bought mom one to display with her other '60s toys.
