I've noticed this awhile ago but have to post it now..(It concerns E-Bay) have you noticed that if a certain line of figures that is popular (Star Wars,ML,DCU,MOTU,TF etc.) gets put on E-Bay the idiot selling it jacks the price up on it "Just Because" of the name even though 99.9% of the time it's a common and cheap ass figure that everyone has and no one wants... And they use the word "RARE" and "Hard To Find" to pedal a piece of crap... I even came across a picture of something that was wrong and TRIED to be helpful and send a html link to the picture to the seller and they got all wigged out and tried to say that I was giving them a virus....WTF? This is why I ALWAYS treat this as a HOBBY not a source of income (That's why I have a job) maybe the low life's that pull this crap like I mentioned will go away someday and give us back our hobby...

Ya I really stopped trying to help the scalpers and the people on ebay, I will help anyone here anyway I can but the ebay just gives me a headache. Some really great deals if you collect the lines that no one else does though.

My big bugbear is at the risk of offending anyone here, US buyers- specifically US Transfans.
Most of us who are buying things overseas, just accept that international shipping is high because you're shipping things vast distances so $30-$60 shipping charges are fairly normal. On top of that, in the case of Transformers, generally, international retail costs (even in Canada) are generally 1.5-2.5 times what they are in thie US (deluxe sized figures for example generally cost $27USD). And so when you're selling stuff off and trying to just break even often, on forums alone, you'll often (not here thankfully) get people accusing you af scalping or claiming that the shipping costs are outrageous like you suddenly own the postal service in your country and are just trying to rip everyone off with sky-high shipping costs. This has happened on Transfans and on a couple of Facebook Transformers groups. On eBay, this translates to no US sellers even looking at your auctions.
Worse still are the Transfans who accuse you of trying to scalp on an older figure because they assume you MUST be talking about the latest figure to carry that name. Case in point: about a year ago, I decided to sell off my Transformers Universe Nemesis Prime that I'd had for a few years for around $90US (which was about what he was going for). Anyway I had people claiming they could get the same figure for $50 and that I was dreaming if I wanted that price for it. It turned out they were talking about the SDCC Universe Classics 2.0 figure that they had just assumed I was talking about. Is it any wonder that I'm starting to distance myself more and more from the Transformers fan community in case their collective arrogance, narcissim and ignorance is contageous (not all fans of course, just ALOT of fanboys).

Yeah, I noticed that too. Problem is, it's not just ebay. I always love comming across a yard sale where people print out an ebay auction (in which the item didn't even sell by the way) and tack it on an old beat to heck item thinking it's worth what a MIB example is worth. Another thing at flea markets, just because something says "Star Wars", it's got to be worth at least $50. It can be a used napkin....as long as it's Star Wars it must be worth a fortune!

Yes, that is absolutely true with Star Wars and the funny thing is unless an item is high grade it is one of the worst reselling old lines there are. I mean you can sell new figures for more then alot of vintage figures. When I am buying something to resell and I tell people I would rather have a new Millenium Falcon than an old one they look at me like I am crazy but the reality is you can sell a new one for just as much and chances are it is going to be in better condition.
As far as the problem Bowspearer is talking about, that is directly on Ebay and the postal system. Before the feedback change and the total lack of security when it comes to acquring new ID's there was a check and balance system. You could trust people and send items cheaply. I used to be able to send stuff internationally for next to nothing surface or first class. Now with one sided feedback there is no protection and the system is unbalanced which is why you have to use Priority or Express. Those prices stink, I hate having to charge those prices. Thats why message communities are so great because noone wants to get slammed in a feedback thread so the system polices itself. Not on the almighty Ebay any more because they just dont care. Do they really think I am going to send a $200 Transformer to Dubai with no protection or the ability to defend myself? The old feedback system was like a nuclear weapon that acted as a deterent. No one is ever going to push the button but just having it in place helped keep things in line. Now they are saying this is the first year where Paypal will actually make more money then Ebay itself and it is expected to double and triple Ebay's numbers in the coming years, so they really do not care about making things work better. They are on this customer satisfaction kick but what they forgot is that the sellers are Ebays customers not the buyers.

Since I've been buying, I've been blown away at how common MOTU figures are. Just a few hours of hitting yard sales within my own town can get you bags full.
I prefer selling on eBay except for the damn fees. It's the best way to move things quicker, reach more people, etc. and also no haggling and usually you can get what the item is worth with over charging or under charging.

In general, MOTU is very, VERY common. It's just that you always end up with the same common figures, and almost never get the rare ones. It's like a bag of Magic the Gathering. Sure there's 15 cards, but only one of them will get you more than 50 cents. It's the same with MOTU, I've noticed. You'll probably go on yard sales and come back with loads of Skeletors, Hordaks, Grizzlors, Leeches, Stratoses and Beastmen, but you don't find Saurod, the Sorceress, King Randor or Scare Glow. You'll find twenty thousand incomplete Greyskull husks, but you don't find Eternia. When selling, it's my experience you can, on average, get more for a loose weapon than you can for a common figure. The weapons are really what makes MOTU valuable at all in lots. EVERYBODY still has the figures. They're like indestructible.

Sy-Klone is so damn common. I think I have four of him already! But very rarely does he has his chest piece.
I saw about 10 Ram Man's last weekend at a flea market.

it boggles my mind not only how overpriced some items are (on ebay, online stores, and toyshops too) but also the fact that the sellers would rather sit on this stuff FOREVER rather than lower the price. i have had some ebay store items in my watch list for well over a year, waiting for the seller to figure out that "wow, i guess no one is willing to pay the obscene price i put on this item". but the prices have yet to come down. when i sell i would always rather move items for a less than top-dollar price, if it means actually making a sale.

Because some are hard headed and truly believe that what they have is worth gold. A lot of sellers are also hoping that one clueless sucker is going to come along. They bank on it.
People on Craigslist are getting wild too. I posted an ad looking for toys and hated to be rude but clearly stated, NO EBAY PRICES. If you want ebay prices, go do the eBay work. People have ended up giving me prices much HIGHER than typical eBay prices! Haha.

Problem is these days that's how people judge worth and e(evil_bay(as I call it) is unreliable for exsample one auction an item can go for 20 another 50 but another only 10 one person for exsample tried to dell me a 5$ item for 30(I had originaly said I'd pay ten) but they wouldn't relent(I might have even gone to 20 for it but 30 I felt was too high) and in anothr case an 80s figure (sans acess)went for over 2,000! bit ridiculous if you as me.

I'm STILL trying to figure out the prices for MIP Star Wars from the 1990s. Big lots going for $3-$5/figure - who is buying them?

Somebody replied to my Craigslist ad for old toys....
Her:
"I have a HUGE bin full of GI Joe & some assorted action figures tossed in with them but mainly GI Joe brand. There are vehicles, policemen & tons of weapons in the bin, ALL GI Joe. I want the whole bin GONE ASAP!"
*the above got me excited
"I am getting ready to list the WHOLE bin on craigslist for $700 or Best offer."
Excitement died (lol)
Me:
You mean the really old ones from the 60s and 70s? (the tall guys)? - D.
Her:
"No...we started buying these for my oldest son who was born in '94. They are the tall ones but not the older ones, maybe from 1990 on I would guess. They aren't the small action figures, they are the "Barbie Doll" size."
AHHHHhh. So not only are they not even 80s Joes, they are (what I'm assuming) are the 90s reissues...for the low price of $700...
I clearly put 1980s TOYS in my ad.

Oh....
Me:
Ah, OK. Yeah, I'm sorry but I am only interested in the small ones and pre-1989 ones too. They sound like the reissues of the old ones, which are going to be a very tough sell at $700... - D.
Her:
"It's the last bin of 5 total that I had...should be a quick sell at 700 being as the others went within 2 days for over 1000 a piece (insert wink)"
RIGHT lady.....
