I know this may sound strange at first sight, but I think dollar stores have a bit of responsibility here. Let me explain. When you go to a dollar store, you get many things for just 1$ or so. So, when a customer goes to a dollar store, and then goes to Ebay, he/she will hesitate to pay 10$ for anything when he/she is used to pay 1$ or 2$ for chinese-made items. I think there is a link between those low prices in dollar stores and all the wacky caprices customers have when they go somewhere else, including Ebay, where things can be more expensive for many reasons those customers are not conscious of. What do you think? It's exactly why I sell stuff at a flea market as well. There are a good many toys and stuff that fall into the $1-$7 range where they are only worth the shipping cost, which means selling them at a profit is hard.

I'm starting to get on my last thread with ebay. I can't fathom how sellers think bank transfers are a good idea. That's even more unrealistic than paypal is. Bank transfers cannot be protected by banks when you send them internationally. Bank transfers cost generally around 40 dollars to complete, and spending that much, whent he original item cost 4-10 dollars is ridiculous. Sorry, that was my rant for the day.

One, that probably isn't Ebay's fault. I do everything with paypal (or money order if requested from a good buyer, but haven't had that in a while). I would see bank transfer as a scam attempt.

As a seller I actually had paypal decide in my favor recently in a dispute. The buyer purchased a coin from me for 77.00. He emailed me and said that it was a fake, and it should be thrown away, but he still wanted a refund. I told him I would issue a refund if he returned the coin. This was not good enough for him as he insisted on "throwing the coin away" and still receiving the refund. Duh. He opened a case with paypal, and they told him he needed to return the coin. he provided them with faking tracking #s, so they closed the case and decided in my favor. he then appealed, and they shotm down the appeal. what a moron. I think i'll go to Macy's ....buy a diamond ring, and return two days later and tell them the ring was fake, so I threw it away....but I would like my money back all the same. i like this story - its similar to a grade a asshole i am dealing with who- now listen to this.... bought an item from me- a construction kit, then said it didnt arrive so i refunded him- but now wants another replacement AS WELL AS A REFUND or he will report me to ebay and leave bad feedback

To people saying you can't leave negative feedback on a buyer. I wait til I receive positive feedback to leave it for the buyer. If for some reason they decide to unfairly leave me negative feedback, I will put a negative response in the positive feedback area, like "don't sell to this guy, scam artist" in capiotal letters. Also, I don't ship overseas, and I get delivery confirmation for EVERYTHING. I have never had a bad feedback, only 2 neutrals. I also write to the buyer and ask them to please let me know FIRST if there's any problem, and I post the tracking number. Gotta protect yourself, and honestly, as a buyer, it annoys me when someone doesn't post that an item has been shipped at the least. (and I'm much happier when they post a tracking number)

I am having fun buying and selling on Ebay but I don't know if I would like it if I depended on it for a living. They take a rather large bite between Ebay and Paypal and there are a lot of ways to get screwed. I do realize that some of the stuff that people look for is quite rare and some will throw caution to the wind at the chance to acquire something that looks really juicy but this is a calculated risk is it not?

It's REAL hard to make a living on ebay - I think the only people who really do it are those who got into the drop-shipping game early, and MAYBE if they're the only guy in town hitting garage and estate sales. More than likely, they're doing it on the side like guys like me do.
Ebay/paypal's bite is somewhere around 10%, give or take (which, in the old world of consignment sales, is a STEAL).
Ebay does a VERY good job of protecting buyers, and sellers who push the system and operate honestly typically can protect themselves if something happens.
Hey, life and business are all calculated risks.

Feedback Means Nothing any more. Once you have a wack of current feedback you are set. A negative here and there means nothing...and most people dont care. Sellers dont leave feedback until buyers do and buyers dont usually bother... I sold about 100 to 150 items last summer and my feedback went up by about 20... Whats coming next, I bet, is a step by step feedback system... buyer buys item... seller sends invoice same day... buyer pays and gets feedback for paying same day... seller prints ebay label and gets feedback for printing ebay label and mails same day... buyers gets feedback for acknowledging the arrival of package... now any problems can be sesolved once this feedback is complete... buyer likes items and leaves feedback... seller leaves final feedback for over all experiance... its the 8 step process to ebay bliss!

Here's my key to feedback - don't obsess over it. Describe an item properly and ship quickly with tracking, and you're fairly golden - at least, that's what's worked for me for a long time. I'm sitting on 100%, and only recently had to refund for something that broke in the mail for the first time in ages. I think I had one situation last year which I managed to talk a buyer down out of a negative, politely pointing to how well I communicated over my screwup.
I don't really mind the fb system as it is - most people look at the overall #, if they look at all. I leave sparingly for sellers (I probably should more often). I usually leave a quick fb after a buyer leaves one for me, if they don't complain in the fb or something.

I always ship with insurance and tracking, it's expensive as hell but the items get where they should and if something goes wrong then I can see if package was delivered and if not file insurance.
There have been problems with theft within swedish post service as well, recently they caught 2 workers that had stolen goods worth over 2million. I've gotten 6 valuable envelopes stolen during the last 3 years. I know they where because I've bought a lot from those sellers before and they have always been perfect.
What they do is that they open the letters and see whats in it. if it's valuable it goes into pocket. I've gotten taped envelopes plenty of times. So there's another reason for me to use recommended with insurance and tracking.
Last time I bought an R2, the letter had a cut going straight through the bubble wrapped inside, the thief didn't bother to tape it that time. Was lucky the thing actually arrived since the hole in the letter.

love this post Yeah people are pretty rude in general for little reason. Still, if they pay within 3 days I leave positive feedback. Period. Then I send it. I often use mediamail though. Always for books/records, etc. I don't care if it takes a long time really. I have a no returns policy always as well. Thing is, some items I do ship priority with tracking and confirmation and all that and STILL they don't leave me any feedback. So I really don't care if the item takes a day or a year to get there. Just want them to pay and for the item to be out of my hair. Yeah I'm not losing patience with ebay, but losing faith in the customers there. The nail is hit right on the head! Feedback Means Nothing any more. Once you have a wack of current feedback you are set. A negative here and there means nothing...and most people dont care.
