I lived for this cartoon when it was on in the 80's. It was the closest thing to Conan a kid could get on Saturday mornings. A brawny, kick butt hero, a lightsaber inspired sun-sword, the catch phrases , the babe, the brawny Chewbaca-like sidekick - what's not to love. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhAobPugvskToynami released figures for the main characters (Thundarr, Ariel and Ookla) a few years ago, immortalizing them in plastic a good 20 years after the show went off the air. I'm eternally grateful that all three got made in one wave but disappointed we didn't get any villains in the line. I'm correcting that (at least on my shelf) by making customs of some of my favorite bad guys from the show. I just finished the evil wizard, Gemini. The whole two faces thing creeped me out as a kid - but I wanted to capture that in the custom. You can change from his "dour" to "all-out-evil" face by spinning the head 180 degrees and popping a visor over the head facing the rear. I know it was a small line but I wanted Thundarr to get a thread of his own. Any other Thundarr fans out there?

I also loved Thundarr, my favorite 80's cartoon,, your custom is right on target with the line its awesome, I signed the petition to get the DVD's released , I hope they do soon ,
My brain keeps teasing me with a Live action movie teaser, it starts with showing most of the cartoon intro but live action then it goes dark and all you hear is , Ariel,Ookla , RIDE! ,,,,,*shivers* an another note this cartoon was so well done , I think Jack kirby? was the comic artist they got to do the art, I hope they make the mounts for the figs , kinda odd not have them riding anything ,

You can get all 21 episodes on bootleg DVDs taped from when the show was re-run on Boomerang but no official DVD set yet. If Blackstar can get a DVD release, Thundarr deserves this treatment too.
I think a live action flick could be cool - sort of a LOTR meets Road Warrior with a little Escape from NY mixed in.
I was really striving to make Gemini look like he was really apart of the line. I used a Space Ghost figure to get that buff hero-like frame without too much muscle definition. I bought a couple loose Space Ghost figs off Ebay so I can make a few more customs for the line.
Thundarr trivia: While Jack Kirby designed most of the villains and secondary characters for the show, Thundarr, Ariel and Ookla were designed by Alex Toth (same guy who designed Space Ghost and the Herculoids).

Fantastic work Uriah, as much the Toonami trio well rendered the feel and presence of the character, your Gemini work perfectly! At first when I saw the picture I though it was an unrealized figure, he really looks the part. The dual persona are pretty good, the evil face is spot on Kirby badness.
I too wish Thundarr could appear on DVD, it was one of the most enjoyable shows of this era. They’re some on YouTube Plastic Hero, at least it allow seeing some back. Just like you I didn’t saw any since my youth.

I love THundarr. Have the figures, wish I had that custom. I have the bootleg DVD, and it's worth buying it. I like watching it a lot.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to start Xavon the werewolf from the "Brotherhood of Night" episode then Zogar the barbarian from "Battle of the Barbarians".
Unlike other "soft action" cartoons that came later, Thundarr never left you empty. I never felt like the battles in MOTU or Blackstar were satisfying - they could have replaced the Power Sword and Star Sword with magic wands without missing a beat. But when Thundarr egnited the Sun Sword, you knew somebody was gettin' hacked.
The writers didn't tease you with "what ifs" either. In Brotherhood of Night, the threat of the werewolves turning one of the main characters or realizing their ultimate goal of turning the local wizard were both realized in the span of 30 minutes.
Thundarr himself is turned into a werewolf and attacks his friends - then later, the werewolves storm the wizard's fortress and turn him too. In other cartoons, the story would have climaxed with a character almost getting turned but being rescued at the last second. In Thundarr, all the worst case scenarios are played out, making the heroic triumph at the end much more satisfying. Plus the fanboy in you gets to see how an evil werewolf Thundarr would look.
They can't release these on DVD soon enough.

There was a plastic lunchbox (had it) and possibly a board game (heard rumors)
Toynami did a couple of different Space Ghosts: regular (1st version), light up hand (2nd version), and a clear version. They also used the mold to make a villain whose name escapes me (reverse color scheme w/gray and white). And, of course, Brak, Moltar, and Zorak.
They also produced Herculoids.

I've got all of the Thundarr figures, Herculoids and the space ghost figures. The space ghost ones kinda suck, because they are from the Coast to Coast talk show he had, but, if you open them up, then you can lose the desk he comes with, and just pose the figure without the extra crap. Still a good figure though. They should have made the Jan and Jayce figures along with that monkey. That would have been better.
