Remco gave its sculptor a Mattel doll to show him what kind of doll it wanted, and to insure that Remco's doll would not appear to be the physically weaker of the two toys.
My favorite quote from the article thanks for posting it. I love the Warlord comic.

That is sweet. I hate to say it though.....I always liked the Remco figures more. I concur. Even though MOTU was far and away more popular,if I had the money and space to collect everything I wanted to,I would undoubtedly collect the Remco figures before I would collect the MOTU ones. They were more detailed.

In my opinion, I think Mattel wasted its time and money sewing Remco for "copying" them. Why? Because everyone, even as kids, NOTICED that Remco just followed the fantasy-MOTU fashion tide. These things happen all the time. You see, Remco never actually negated that it was inspired by MOTU. To me, being inspired by someone else's work is not a crime when the "copyer" ADMITS PUBLICALLY he-she has been inspired by someone else. And Remco, to my eyes, never hidden its source of inspiration. Didn't Go-Bots and Golden Girls do the same with Transformers and She-Ra? They did. But they also NEVER NEGATED it. As a child, I would equally play with Tranformers and Go-Bots, though I knew Go-Bots were inspired by Transformers. But I didn't mind.
When someone "copies" someone else, to me, it becomes a crime when the source of inspiration is hidden; for example, when the "first creater" doesn't have the credit for what he-she did. But Mattel got plenty of credit and success with MOTU. So, why bother? See what I mean?
