I don't understand what the big deal is over figures and/or packaging with minor variants? Some collectors go crazy over this stuff, maybe because they are worth more, I don't know. Honestly, who cares if the package says "Darth Vader" or "Darth Vader Sith Lord". Or a dot rather than a square on the back of the figures hand. It is still the exact same figure, big deal! Does this still go on like it did in the late 90s with the POTF2 figures?

I've never been interested in variants. As long as I have one of said figure I'm happy. I don't need 8 different versions of it to complete my collection.

The only thing I would consider owning 2 of, for example, is the 1st Luke figure in the vintage Star Wars line. One with yellow hair and one with brown hair. It is a significant enough variant, though I wouldn't really go out of my way to track down the other version. If I came across it I would keep it.

I had a deluxe boba fett with a dot on one hand that I sold on ebay for $150.00. I like variants. I have figures that have 2 right arms, unpainted variants. In gi joe there are figures with different versions, like starduster or steel brigade, with different body parts or paint schemes. In the later series, they released figures with different repaints and different packaging which I consider to be unique figures.

The Joes you mentioned would be cool to pick up as variants, but I don't know about the Fett. I couldn't imagine paying $150 for the same figure but with only a dot instead of a square. I would buy it if I saw it in the store to do exactlly what you did, make money on Ebay!
