I remember a few years back I had a dream where I went to a store and discovered they were selling the vintage Star Wars figures or at least reasonable facsimiles thereof. I believe this was sometime during the late 90's or so but I never thought they would actually do it. I don't collect much these days so I had no clue about Target's Retro Collection up until yesterday. I saw they were sold out on Target's website so I took a road trip to the nearest town from me that had a Target store. Although I was out of luck for any of the individual figures, I did manage to get a Grand Moff Tarkin figure in the Escape From The Death Star game. Since this was a two hour round trip drive for me I went by the store again on my way out of town to see if any more had found their way onto the pegs but no dice. They had the pegs for the figures by the novelty tees, an odd choice and definitely not the first place I would look. An employee's handheld device said the store had 8 Chewbaccas on the floor so I thought it would be nice to at least get one of the figures but none could be found.

This is certainly better than passing off limited articulation on modern sculpts as "retro". Outside of the general appeal it holds for other collectors, what I find cool is that once they get lower in price it'll be an easy way to find repro accessories to fill in any gaps (with the bonus of a spare figure, cardback and fresh bubble I guess). I wonder how much this Hasbro release owes to the success of Super7's ReAction lines?

I wonder how much this Hasbro release owes to the success of Super7's ReAction lines? It could be the success of those lines plus I wonder if it's an attempt to bring possibly alienated older fans back into Star Wars. Not that I'm one . As of now I no longer buy any new Star Wars figures but having the old figures back is compelling, I must admit.

Now is probably wise time to squeeze the "old" fans a bit more. Many will feel the curtain drop in December.

If I can't find these at pretty much retail price, I doubt I will collect them. I'm not paying scalpers $20+ a piece for these figures, I'll be okay going without. Right now these are always sold out mostly to scalpers I suspect.

Target, as always, really mishandled this exclusive. But to my advantage: after never seeing them on shelves at any Target I perused, I finally found two full sets on the clearance shelves at a Target a couple towns away from me, and they rang up at $2.99 each! I don't believe they were ever on the shelves at all, they probably pulled them straight from the back room to the clearance shelf.

The Target employee I talked to gave me the impression that these retro figures were being seen as a novelty Father's Day type of thing. Really? One minute I think Target is trying to help the sagging action figure industry by selling/hosting these exclusives and the next minute they seem to have no clue on how to handle them. At the few Targets I have been to you couldn't throw a stone without hitting one of those Escape From The Death Star games but as I mentioned had no stock out for the individual figures.

I'm not a fan of reusing retro sculpts as a cash grab. I think that it is damaging to the secondary market and is also predatory marketing. Now something like the G.I. Joe 25th line was brilliant and perfectly executed. New, amazing sculpts of vintage material on homage card backs.
Recasts are crap, and I sincerely hope that the greater market rejects them so it's not reinforced to continue doing this.

I would be in if they did "retro collection" sculpts of figures that were never produced for the original line (Tarkin, unproduced Droids, etc.). Otherwise, I already own all of these for over 40 years now. Saw a few in the stores but at the $15 price point per figure, I don't know why anyone wouldn't just buy an original loose figure.

$15 huh? The price creep is real. Super7 are now pushing $20 a pop for their latest Reaction offerings too... but at least they are doing licenses you haven't seen done and rereleased time and again over the years.

When it comes to Star Wars figures I'm pretty much in a place where the Retro Collection is the only thing I'm interested in. This is the only current line for Star Wars where I would say "Take my money, please.". I have heard that Hasbro has been disappointed with the sales of it so who knows how long it will go on? The figures seemed to fly off the pegs like they were in hyperdrive from what I have seen but they know better than us. The board game with the Tarkin figure seemed to hang around for a bit but the last few times I've been to a Target store I don't recall seeing any.

Why I decided to stop collecting the vintage ones was because I know I would never able to complete the line due to the prices on figures like Yak Face. That is why the Retro Collection appeals to me, sort of like another chance at completing the line.

Whos all planning on picking up the set of 7 Mandalorian Retro figures? I pre-ordered a set from EB Games here in Canada and after taxes comes to just shy of $140 for the set. Seems pricey to me, but been outta the "New" figure game for some time (for the most part) and haven't really been into anything new since they caboshed the 3 3/4" Marvel Infinite line hasbropulse.com/products/star-wars-retro-collection-the-mandalorian

I'll pass on the Mandolorian figures but we'll see what they do with the Retro Collection from here.

I picked up a loose Tarkin off a Chinese seller on Ebay that just came in, and looks great. It was only $13 but not sure if still available. Was looking for a loose Snowspeeder Luke but looks like the cheapest way to get one is buying the game it came with new on Amazon for $35.

Has anyone ordered the 2nd wave Mandalorian figures yet? Got mine in a few weeks ago but honestly haven't had a real good look at them yet.

Pretty cool. We still never got the Remnant Trooper that was listed on some wave 1 cardbacks though.
