I have learned to embrace to world of social media...somewhat. I don't read up on upcoming toys much these days, but I learned about Mutant Mania on Instagram. Naturally, I ran out the next day and scooped up a bunch at Toys R Us. So rad!
Basically, they're almost like the modern day equivalent of M.U.S.C.L.E.s (depending on your point of view) mixed with a smidge of Mutant League. If you like a lot of the stuff that Moose Toys puts out, you might wanna check these guys out. I liked Trash Pack, but never intended to "collect 'em all" and was happy to get any I could. With these? I'm seriously enough in love that I MIGHT try to collect them all! There are different mutant factions and lots of characters. Aside from the fully painted versions, each character has a transparent colored version (with painted eyes).
Unlike Trash Pack, these guys are not solid pieces, nor rubbery. Like Trash Pack, they come packaged in different ways with different amounts of figures...mostly blind surprises. They also have storage containers shaped like soda cans. Each can seems to feature a different mutant faction (reptiles, undead, robots, etc.).
Each figure is composed of three plastic body segments held together by a rubber spine that hooks into the head and lower body. The mid-section then slides in between the affixed head and legs. I've heard others gripe, online, about this. It seems some folks prefer that these would have been solid. However, I think that the point is to be able to knock the figures apart and mix and match the body parts. Normally, gimmicks are hit or miss for me when it comes to toys...and I actually LIKE this gimmick! You do get a few extra "spines" in the sets...just in case, but I do worry they will not stand the test of time.
I was kinda initially mad about the amount of translucent figures you get. Not that I hate monochromatic figures (technically, the eyes are colored, so they aren't REALLY monos), but I prefer the fully painted guys. At any rate, I quickly changed my tune. I actually love the way these guys look when you customize the parts!
I don't keep track of all the stuff Moose puts out. I've mainly just gotten Trash Pack in the past. I did collect Fistful of Power for a while, but got annoyed at the amount of grey translucent figures and doubles I was getting. I'm happy to say I only got one colored double so far and five translucent doubles. Not bad. I'm really happy with Mutant Mania so far. I am looking forward to future waves to see what they can come up with. Highly recommended if you like "little rubber guys".
