I've seen very vague info on this toy line over the years. I know Hasbro was producing it, and they made a line of figures in prototype form, but I guess retailers never bought into it? I found some images lately that I thought would be cool to help get a thread going. Does anyone here actually have some samples to show? I would have loved this line I think. And this bear image shows what might have been a really cool vehicle.

I've seen pics of the prototypes. I can't remember if it was in Lees Toy Review or a similar magazine. They reminded me of the figures from the Bone Age Line, weren't they going to be the same scale?

I believe they were 5-6 inches. They had a battle-action where their arms would swing, and a button on their chests, that if it was struck it would launch off their animal tribe mask.

They reminded me of the figures from the Bone Age Line, weren't they going to be the same scale? The photos of the prototypes I've seen suggest they were very MOTU inspired. In scale, card artwork, in high-adventure fantasy theme, and with the 'mask-poppin'' action feature. Can't say for certain but looks like they coulda' had rubber band leg joints for easy positioning on their beast mounts too. (I don't wanna' go uplifting other peoples/sites fotos but the cardback artwork is lush!) Perhaps it was too much similarity that stopped production. No high-profile company like Hasbro wanted to step on He-Man's toes and be the one to open a huge can of Mattel lawsuit.

You're right they were going to be a larger scale. They would have been a cool line, you can't go wrong with giant beast mounts!

So this was going to be released in the mid 80s then? At the height of the popularity of MOTU Interesting. I kinda doubt they were afraid of a lawsuit. Afterall, there were tons of MOTU knock-off lines and imitators out there.
I'd never heard of Tribes before. It just goes to show there's no end to what you can discover in this hobby. Thanks for sharing!

Does anyone have any links to where I would be able to see the prototypes?
Edit: Nevermind, found some. They look great!

These are awesome. Sucks they never got made. Someone should start a Kickstarter to get them done now. I'd buy that bear art just for a poster.

Probably a good time to cheer VictoryLeo19 for the heads up on these guys. Still kinda' surprised they'd never been discussed here. Oh, and VictoryLeo19, are the promo card/art pieces you posted actually items you own? (I know you're a bit of a proto-fiend, lucky you if so) I think I saw one or two Tribes items on the bay recently.

There are a few sellers on ebay who seem to constantly get good Hasbro/Kenner protos in from time to time. I usually check their completed listings and these guys just popped up so I snagged the images. I stick entirely to Pirates of Dark Water and Bucky O'hare when it comes to prototypes now, but I won't say I wouldn't be tempted if something as cool as this comes up. The whole problem with prototype stuff is how expensive it is. I usually sell off entire mini-collections of toy lines I really like, in order to buy just one or two pieces. It is fun though!

There were three different protos (at three different stages of the process) of the a "battle cat" like figure up on eBay about three years ago. Was very cool as both a figure and as protos. I didn't jump on them when I had the cash; someone I know with a bottomless pit collection grabbed a few I think around that time though.

Found this image recently. Such a shame, this toy line would have been incredible.

Thanks for sharing! No. These are from 1990. MOTU was dead. A complete set of the painted hardcopies and tons of artwork and proof material recently sold. One guy on instagram "protohoarder" managed to purchase one of the double hardcopies.
