Do you ever get bored collecting a certain line, regardless of how complete your collection is? You love it but after a certain amount of years collecting it you just get sort of burned out on it?

Yes I do. When it happens I stop collecting to concentrate on another activity. When I give up doing something during a long time, the interests comes back again later and, then, it feels new again.
You see, it's like eating the very same thing meal after meal. No matter if it's the best plate in the world, eating it day after day becomes necessarily boring after a long time; and then, you jump on every occasion you can to eat anything else at all.
It's he same thing for collecting. Collecting gets boring when you do it day after day dyring a long period. When it becomes an "old" activity, you feel the need to do something else. See what I mean?

Yeah, I think I do. I've been a fan of the original trilogy of Star Wars movies basically all my life and I've collected the toys since '97 but it's starting to get a little old. The new 6 inch figures haven't excited me as of yet like I thought they would. Maybe time away from collecting Star Wars would help.

After vintage I started with clone wars which was a fresh start for me. I am to a bit bored, I've started over my vintage collection two times and this time I finally got it complete. I'm taking a little break from vintage sw at moment and getting cw figures but I really do like black series.

When Hasbro has begun a new series over the past few years, such as they did this year with the Black Series, I have been asking myself if it would be a good point to stop and retire from collecting Star Wars. I "retired" briefly after 2009 but it seems like something sorta drags me back into it. I like the Black Series packaging but the 3 3/4" figures are probably going to be 90% characters they've already done. The 6 inchers will pretty much be slightly larger versions of the same characters. I do collect a few other things and I'm just wondering to myself if it's time to see if there's collecting life for me after Star Wars, so to speak. I'm not trying to turn this into an episode of "As The World Turns" or anything .

Nope. Never. The closest thing to boredom I ever feel with figures is immense frustration that I don't get to spend enough time on them. I'm lucky to get a few hours out of a week to dedicate to figures - they are my luxury respite from grown-up drudgery. Id have to be incarcerated 24/7 in a toy museum for a looong time to get bored with figures.

When we have a lot of interests, we hardly get tired of what we do, because we keep turning to new things all the time, even if the "new" thing is actually an old thing that came back after an absence. Like I said earlier, it's comparable to a menu. We get easily tired when we eat the same thing day after day, but when we have a variety in our menues, we don't get tired of what we eat. Is my theory appliable to you?

Variety is definitely a key factor in collecting (and life in general, I guess). I also collect music on various formats, and it's nice to go back and forth between things. Also, collecting more than one toy line I find as a good way of not getting fed up with concentrating on just one thing.

I believe it takes a different kind of personality to focus collecting on one thing, whether it be figures or anything else. I also get music from older formats such as records and cassettes. I make CDs out of them. I have been doing that since '06 and have probably done around 600 records and/or casssettes in that time.

I can relate guys; I juggle loads of activities to stay stimulated. I remember getting bored with my joes in the early days and as a means to entertain myself I began blowing up and burning my figs. Of course, I've re collected since, but it was worth it.

I collect so many lines, I NEVER get bored of it. In fact, it's the complete opposite. If I had more space in my toyroom and more disposable income, I'd collect more lines.I guess once a line is near completion, it doesn't have the same excitement as it did when I first saw them and decided I wanted them, but I jump back and forth between lines so I still don't have any FULLY complete lines. Some I'm just a figure or 2, or a playset away (well, there's some smaller windup lines I have that are complete, but not any huge major action figure lines.)

I collect so many lines, along with pre-'90 video games, that I can jump back and forth between them, which I do quite often. If I buy 2-3 vintage Star Wars items in a row I usually get an itch to go to G.I. Joe, and then to Masters of the Universe, etc. It definitely makes it feel like you're never making progress on a particular line, but it keeps it fresh.

If I had more disposable income I would more fully collect some of the lines I do. I might take on a few smaller lines but times aren't easy right now and more important things take precedent. I view collecting as a luxury that I can only indulge in when I have the other, more important bases covered. From 1997-2001 I over-indulged in collecting, shall we say. I never kept a count, but I bet from 2002-now I haven't bought as many figures as I did in those first four years of collecting.

else3573: what you just said definitely goes with my theory: you don't exactly have a variety of hobbies, but you balance the fact while you collect a VARIETY of lines; this is why you don't get bored. You still have variety.

I got bored collecting MOTU a few years ago and walked away from the community. I thought about selling my collection and starting something new but the more I contemplated it, the more I realized that I collect because of my love for He Man toys. They were a huge part of my best childhood memories and I was never interested in resale value or bragging rights.
I have since resumed collecting and have a different appreciation for the things I buy.

I'm kind of at a weird point. I've found myself buying current stuff more and more. I feel like finding good deals on older stuff is harder and harder to come by. I used to believe 80's stuff was drying up, but now I really do stick to that. It's become so....boring lately. He-man lots are so "reprocessed" that I very rarely see an actual lot from someone's basement that's been dormant for years.
It doesn't help that the old haunts like foreign countries have started to dry up too. I used to find at least one or two awesome lots or things every week or two. Now I'm lucky to find one amazing lot every 2-3 months. I guess this is the nature of this hobby. I should have seen this years ago. (Going on 15 years of ebay prowling now....I know...kind of depressing).
Hows the hunt on you all's sides?

Never. Never ever ever ever ever. In fact, the older I get the more amazing new lines and types of things I find to collect. There's a never ending supply of awesome out there, and still more new things get made as well.
Between action figures (all eras), gashapon, vinyl figures, statues, vintage toys, and swag I will be on the hunt FOREVER.
And being as I've been unemployed for quite some time and watching tons of coolness pass me by, when I do get work again it's going to be a blizaard toypalooza for awhile (well, after the dentists, car and boring stuff).
I'm still finding all new and crazy things on ebay I could never have imagined still. The deals may not always be as good (although sometimes they ARE), but the discoveries are better than ever!

The thing about collecting is there's always more to collect. When I got into Star Trek figures, it wasn't long before I found deals on other types of Star Trek memorabilia. Pretty soon I had lunchboxes, piggy banks, board games, christmas ornaments, trading cards, cereal bowls, and all kinds of weird misc things. I've never been a completist, but it was fun discovering new things I never knew existed. When my first kid came along, I began trimming off the misc stuff. It was difficult and took a few years, but I'm much happier now that my focus is only on figures. The Playmates Star Trek line is long dead and I don't collect anymore new SW figures, so I'm really just focusing on the MOTU knockoffs. The cool thing with them is there's so little info on them, there's always new things to discover. And it's such a niche market, there's not a lot out there to be tempted by. I don't feel I've ever gotten bored collecting. I think collectors tend to be a little obsessive which negates at least some of the boredom. I've doubted my sanity a few times though

I don't necessarily get bored...just broke and/or overwhelmed! I only give up or sell stuff just because I don't have enough room to KEEP every single thing.

I'm not a completist so that saves me on that level. I'm more of a "mash a bunch of stuff together" collector. Since I like so many different lines/figures/etc. it doesn't get boring. I might get bored with a particular line or something, but than I just find something else that excites me. The problem is, is that sometimes there's a lag between lines. Like I'll be bored of WWF LJN figures and it may take 2-4 months for me to find something else. Or just be OK with randomness. But usually it's a non-stop attack of something crowding my house.

Hows the hunt on you all's sides? Because I've been traveling so much the last three years, this has added a certain thrill to the hunt. I always seem to find some crummy haunt with old toys/collectables in every small town I hit. Even if it's just some crappy old 70s rubber bendy, or Jakks Rocky Balboa, I think it's the context and random factor that keeps it fun. While hitting nature trails and scoping wildlife are the travel priorities, fortunately my girlfriend is er... 'understanding' of my plastic obsession handicap. Or maybe she's just disturbed by the look in my eyes when I spot some musty old junk shop... "There's toy gold in yonder dusty crap store, I can smells it!" -- I'd probably rather have one of everything than everything from one line.

I know what you mean about getting bored, when you've been looking for certain pieces to complete the set & the search goes on & on & on & on!
However, anytime I get bored with one line I either switch to one of the other's I'm collecting or even more likely, I start an entirely new line of collecting. then the focus is on that + I'm all good, + don't you just know that 6 months, a year, maybe more down the line I find myself in the same situation & I switch back to the one I got bored with before!
It's a perfect circle that gets bigger & bigger all the time!

About 10 years ago I got a bit burned out and started building a race car. I still had my collection.. just stopped buying toys for around a year. It was not until I attended a toy show in 2006 (around a year and a half later) that my mom asked me to go along with her. That is when I got the fever again. I think my kick then was Mego and Remco monsters.

Years ago I used to go on "toy runs", trips out of town for the sole purpose of locating figures. Of course this was back in the late 90's with more than a handful of stores to check. With the internet you may pay a premium price but you can toy hunt in your pj's without having wear and tear on your vehicle plus gas, meals, etc. However, something was to be said for the "thrill of the hunt". It was kinda fun going to the store and heading towards the toy aisle, wondering what you might find.

I did almost drop wee wild things(But then I found some now that I need but three I might as well get the rest) and I don't drop single items sometimes just because I lose interst(like Energon megatrons tank and sword as classics cyuclonus) and I'm considering dropping nemesis prime(armada) too.
