Whats up with all the broken thumbs in the 1982 Joes I,m trying to find replacement parts so I don't have to buy a complete figure, but its pretty scarce. These must have been made with some cheap ass plastic. I hope somebody got fired over at Hasbro in the early 80s. How the hell is my Scarlett going to pick up "a date" with no thumbs to hitch-hike with?

There was a problem with the 82 figures, mostly with the figures that had long sleeves (not the Flash arms) but that's not to say that the short sleeved figs didn't have thumb breaking issues. It's just that the long sleeved figures seemed to loose thumbs at the drop of a hat.Zap,Stalker,Grunt,Scarlett, Shortfuse,Snake eyes, & Hawk were all thumbless in my childhood collection(poor Zap had the code name of Thumbless because every single figure I got of him had his thumbs fall off. )When the swivill arm battlegrip was introduced the following year (& these guys got the upgrade) most of these issues were resloved. As far as Scarlett's hitch hiking....time for her to show more leg & hide her stub thumb.

stalker and zap are by far the worse from 82 i sware 90% of the zaps in the world are mamed. but joes as a whole are brittle if kept too cold. ive had guys knees snap whilke they were just standing. so be aware and be careful. temp kills

I finally got my hands on my first 1982 figure. A loose incomplete straight arm Snake Eyes. Unfortuantely his o-ring was stretched. Tried to replace it and snapped the t-hook! Thankfully no thumb loses! Once I get the parts to fix him up, he'll pretty much be as good as new.

I know your saying 82 was bad...but for me it was 83. I started collecting Joes just after they went swivel arm. I had Stalker, Cobra Officer, Cobra Soldier, Snake Eyes, Short Fuse, Rock and Roll and Flash.
All of these had a broken thumb, two broken thumbs, or a broken crotch within a few weeks. When I broke Snake Eyes thats was it I complained to my mom, and she took them all to Woodwards. the manager, who my mom insisted on speaking to replaced them all. I was so amazed...and was totally hooked for 6 years afterwords.
I think they had problems with parts even when they were swivel arm, but after that I only broke a few thumbs.
I have noticed that the worst figures are:
Zap thumbs and crotch Scarlet thumbs Beachhead crotch Stalker thumbs
For my collection I always have a complete figure for each variation...so getting three Zaps was a real pain.

The cool thing about the old Joes though is that they are easy to repair.

One of the Series 1 Joes (Zap I think but I'm not sure) had 3 variations of his weapon and one of them had an extra thick handle that tends to break the thumb off.

Yes this was from the angels involved not with the handle but with the 'shoulder brace' It caused the weapon to be at a bad angle and made the handle turn to its widest point...way to wide for Zaps thumbs which broke almost always the first time he held his bazooka. First they got rid of the double handle Bazooka, then a thin handle.
They also did this for Short Fuse. His motor was not as bad as Zaps bazooka but it went through 3 changes as well. First a closed handle, then an open handled version then a thin handled version.

This past summer I was able to get a Zap with a badly damaged back plate and a completely stripped screw but one good hand, after several weeks I picked up a tiny screwdriver and with some er40 went to work. After a lot of frustration I got him apart and swapped his arm with my thumbless Zap. I looked at his weapon and it was the thin handle variation so very carefully I put it in his hand. No sooner did the handle touch his hand his thumb snapped off. I had just spent about an hour and a half to fix this. Very frustrating but I learned my lesson. I finally just bought a nice one and he is displayed with the bazooka lying at his feet.

ugh!! I wish I had run into you guys a year ago, I have been struggling with this exactly same thing. I didn't have many Joes as a kid- my parents disapproved. Well I bought a small collection from an estate a couple years ago, then decided 6 months ago I would begin retailing some of it online and finally sort through it. (my primary collection is vintage star wars, needed the budget boost...)
I broke several of them just sorting, cleaning, and setting them up for photos. Stupid me, I thought I would get creative and pose a couple of them.
The worst one was Steeler! I replaced a couple of the O-rings successfully, figured I would do the same with him, and by the time I was doone he had two broken thumbs AND a broken shoulder. He is so extremely brittle!! especially the arms. Why is this? I replaced O rings in some of the others, including straight arms, with no difficulty. Steeler's arm broke off just rotating it at the shoulder.

he seems to be made out of a different plastic or something? I have broken his heel before putting him on a figure stand, and his croth...but alot of the early joes break super easy. i have notice that the do seem to loose something out of the plastic that makes them brittle...maybe cause they were left in the sun? or cleaned with a tough cleaner? but some figures i have multiple copies of seem to vary from brittle to almost a soft malleable plastic....
