As some people may or may not be aware, the G2 line had several sub-lines where many of the moulds never saw a mass retail release at the time. While one or two of the G2 Gobots moulds have never had a mass retail release, most of these moulds did see release in later lines.
In terms of their first releases, the moulds in question are the autotransforming cars and jets from Machine Wars (Mirage/Prowl, Hoist/Hubcap, Megatron/Megaplex and Skywarp/Thundercracker ), the Hasbro only Spy Changers from Robots In Disguise (Prowl 2, Daytonus, Sideswipe and Side Burn ) and the 2 new Autorollers from Beast Wars Second (Autojetter and Autolauncher). It is the later of these this topic concerns.
After anxious 2 week wait of the eBay GSP handling it in transit and 6 months of deliberating before pulling the trigger, yesterday, I had the pleasure of receiving a test shot of Autolauncher in the mail:
The thing is though that having owned the final, mass-reeased version, I knew something wasn't right with it as the rolling based transformation gimmick wasn't working on it.
So I pulled it apart alongside my mass release version to inspect it.
What I found was most interesting indeed:
Note the notch marked with a red square and the slot marked by a blue square. On the final version, the notch is in the slot, while it looks like the pin has been slid through the slot without checking that the cog was correctly oriented in the wheel. As a result, the cog in the leg isn't locked in place, preventing the figure from gaining the tension necessary for the autorolling mechanism to be able to function.
I am unsure as to how many of these test shots were produced or how many of them were also misassembled, but if they were all like this, then it could explain why the figure never originally saw mass retail as a part of the Transformers Generation 2 line.
