In a few days another year will be upon us so if you collect you may ask yourself if you have any particular goals in mind going into the next year. Last year in my "goals" thread I had a few specific goals in mind. My only collecting goal going into 2016 will be for my collecting to survive. Not to delve too far into personal matters and/or force a "sob" story on anyone, I can say with confidence this was not a good year for me personally when it comes to collecting. Since July I have not been able to get myself any new figures although my wife snagged me a Kylo Ren a month or so ago and she got me three Twilight Zone figures for me at Christmas. I know I am not alone and my situation is not unique. On the flip side of this coin I seriously doubt from 1997 until this year I ever went a full month without buying at least one figure. A lack of lines out there has played a part in this as there are simply not a lot of lines I am interested in and then the few I am interested in raise their prices(I'm looking at you Star Wars). I have started to do customs so I have got a few loose, older figures at flea markets and thrift stores on the cheap for the purpose of painting later. Like anyone reading this, I have no idea what the new year will bring.

First, I still didn't succeed in putting order in my toys, yet (that was my goal for 2015); they still are in unorganized piles. But I started to through stuff that I could not use anymore (old bras with dried elastics, sandals with holes on the bottom, old socks with holes in them...) and that helps to make more room for my toys. Oof! As for 2016? I really wish to complete the Larami Sharks set. This set, which includes twelve species of sharks, was available in 1997 in Toys'R'Us, along with the Whales set. Since I didn't have enough money at that time to buy them all, I just bought the whales. But today, I want the sharks also. I already have the Larami Horn Shark. It's not much, but it's a start. And right now, a fellow in the Facebook "Whales Dolphins and Sealife Toys" discussion is ready to trade three large Larami Sharks with me. For now, he is interested in my Dor Mei Tortoise (which I have in double). I just need to find two more things that might catch his interest.

bowheadwhale ; While I don't share your level of enthusiasm for some of these creatures I am always delighted to learn of another collector's unique interest. If I ever come across those Larami sharks, you can bet I won't forget to send them your way. I envy you for your ability to make enough room for toys by simply throwing out old clothes . For 2016, I hope to be able to find larger lots and small collections to buy instead of individual figures one at a time.

bowheadwhale ; While I don't share your level of enthusiasm for some of these creatures I am always delighted to learn of another collector's unique interest. If I ever come across those Larami sharks, you can bet I won't forget to send them your way. I envy you for your ability to make enough room for toys by simply throwing out old clothes . For 2016, I hope to be able to find larger lots and small collections to buy instead of individual figures one at a time. Those Larami Sharks (as well as my Larami Whales) are in my top want list because they have a sentimental value to me. Let me explain. It's true that I collect every toy that represents singular animal species (Safari ltd, CollectA, AAA and Bullyland are my favorite brands), especially sealife and prehistoric life. My very favorite animal is the bowhead whale (no wonder why I chose it for my avatar) and other baleen whales follow. Back in 1997, while I was a student at the university (1996 and 1997 were among the best years in my life), Larami lensed two sets of marine animals, available in Toys'R'Us: one set of whales (divided in three boxes) and a set of sharks (also divided in three boxes), featuring 12 species per set (four species per box). Since I didn't have enough money to buy both sets, I chose the one I prefered: the Whales. I don't regret my buy. The only regret I have, is having been in the obligation of letting the Sharks set go. Larami is not the best toy manufacturer to represent animals. For instance, their bowhead whale has a flat head and their finwhale has a roundish snout, while live ones have a pointy snout. But these whales are some sort of "witnesses" of the happiness I felt during the first years of my university studies (things turned emotionnally worse and worse after that; and today I am sick). The remebrance of that happy era of my life is the main reason why I want this particular set of sharks. This is why I am after those Larami Sharks.

It is cool to know the reason why those items would be important to you. I really hope you can come across them someday soon. I don't think I have ever passed by any of them in my searches. I see a lot of uncommon vintage toys at garage sales so I will keep a look out.

My collecting goals last year were more like New Year's Resolutions, and as such were about as effective. But I actually filled a lot more holes in my Mannix collection than I ever thought I would. I got my first Dinos, have almost complete sets of Two Face Monsters & Master of the Fighters, and picked up a rare Viking to boot.
So this year, my main goals are: Complete my Two Face Monsters, find more Dinos, Vikings, Monsters Maniacs & maybe even a jumbo figure (or two), add some more cardbacks to my collection, and discover some new Mannix lines!

I was able to obtain the collection of GI Joe items I was after less one vehicle set which I will pick up this year. I'm still after a complete Marx playset. I am going to collect some more vintage and current GI Joe figures. Both categories. I would like to obtain some MOTU Classics as well as vintage figures. I'm still working on all the toys from the film I was after. I may look into other Toy Lines to begin collecting as well Love all your goals guys & keep us updated!!

I'm not sure you would call this a "goal" but my collection is going to have to go through some major "restructuring" as there have been changes in my life circumstances and such as that. Whatever ends up going on my collecting will not be happening like it did 20 years ago. Or even two years ago.

I need to clean my crap up, I'm out of room! There's more stuff that I want to collect, but nowhere to put it. Yeah I need to put a more solid red line between my "love" and "like" figures. My cup kinda' runneth over with figures I 'just like' but never really needed to keep.

I need to clean my crap up, I'm out of room! There's more stuff that I want to collect, but nowhere to put it. Exactly! That is what I am doing right now in my collectibles room. It looks like I'm moving right now but hopefully I can get it back together again. Now I have to figure out how to liquidate the figures/vehicles/creatures I don't want. Ebay? Flea market? Facebook buy, sell, and trade? Garage sale? All those options have their upsides and downsides.

Depending on how much room you have, it starts to become a question of do I own my collectibles or do my collectibles own me?

My days of having a whole room for my collection are long over. I down-sized dramatically with the birth of my first child. It's tough making those hard decisions of what to keep & what to get rid of. You'll probably have a couple regrets, but overall it's really helpful to figure out what you truly love and makes you appreciate what you have more. Today, I have a closet for storage and a single bookshelf for display. It is a challenge, but I am glad for the limitation.
I've tried every alternative to eBay and I keep going back. It's really the only decent place to move stuff. I suggest using the "Best Offer" option. It seems to be becoming popular with buyers. I've had more success with it recently.

It is tough to get rid of stuff because 98% of stuff I buy I think is cool or at least I did when I bought it but I feel I will enjoy being able to display more of my favorite things. My collection has basically become like a business that has to shrink its operations in order to continue. I think you're right about ebay probably being the best place as far as reaching a specialized audience for whatever items you are trying to sell. The fees get you but like they say you have spend money to make money...

After almost being obsessed with getting my collectible room back to shape, I finally have it looking like a room again and not a disaster but there is still plenty of fine tuning to do. I have began to put my big toe in the waters of trying to sell some of my unwanted items. I'll see how it goes.

It has been a while since I shipped anything as far as collectibles go outside of items that would fit in a padded mailer envelope. I should have schooled myself a bit before I listed items on ebay. Shipping costs have gone up substantially from what I remember. "Standard" shipping is now "retail ground". I mailed two boxes that I believe would have cost about $8.90 each to ship to the best of my recollection cost $11.14 a piece to ship now. The Priority flat rate boxes have went up quite a bit as well. This makes me rethink my position on offering the "free shipping" options on anything that has to be shipped in a box. Understandably, asking the actual shipping cost could make buyers hesitant or make them cautious in amount bid. I would be the same way but between shipping, paypal fees, and ebay fees you also need to make at least A LITTLE bit of money considering the loss I'm already taking since my stuff I'm selling is loose.

Well it's been three months since I started to hit the "reset" button on my collecting. I have liquidated quite a few items once I decided the items weren't just going to get out of my house on their own. Thanks to whomever suggested trying the "best offer" option as far as selling stuff on ebay as I have had a lot of success with it. Between ebay, having a garage sale, one of those buy-sell-trade facebook sites, and just plain giving a few non-selling items away I am a much closer to my goal than I was in February by far. I still have a few items to try and sell but I am definitely liking my collectibles room looking more like an actual room again. Reviewing past posts in this thread, it looks like I have waywardmonk to thank for the "best offer" tip. I have worked very hard, basically all I have done since February is work to sell stuff and I have done about $1,000 in sales. However, when you think of how much was spent to acquire the items in the first place....

Congrats on your reboot. It does suck taking a loss on stuff, but sometimes that's what you gotta do to move things quick. Now you gotta share some new pics

Now you gotta share some new pics Well, my room isn't ready for pics quite yet . However I do wish I would have taken some pics before I started to have some "before and after" sort of visuals but just imagine a room that is a cyclone of action figures and vehicles. I will post some pics once I get the room "camera ready". That might be my goal for 2017!

I want to score a 6" Imperial Kong for a good price. The market for Imperial toys is hard on collectors nowadays. On Ebay, I often see 1980's Imperial dinosaurs with prices going as hugh as 24$ a piece, and I'm not talking about the shipping charges. I think we Imperial collectors will have to wait a little more for the prices to lower a bit.

Most of my Imperial pick-ups have been from flea-markets or from online sellers listing it as a generic dinosaur not knowing details. It may be a long process but searching for 'ape', 'monkey', 'king kong' or 'gorilla' with a few search filters under toys could be a better way to score one.

The problem is (if we consider it a problem, of course), is that this way, you won't be sure if it's really an Imperial toy or a Knock-off, even though it is from the very same mold. Lately, I bought a magnificient Imperial Styracosaurus that was just described as "Rubber dinosaur". However, when I received it, I saw that the Imperial name and crown were missing, the mark on the belly only saying "made in China". But the mold and size are exactly the same as the original Imperial 1985 Styracosaurus. This is how I learned that Imperial molds were used by other manufacturers.

By curiosity: HOW MANY OF YOU SUCCEEDED IN ACHEIVING 2016'S GOALS? As for me, I didn't. Not only my toys are still in inorganized piles, but I didn't succeed in gathering the complete set of Larami Sharks either. Oh! I have more than one year ago: I acquired the Scallopped Hammerhead, the Great White, the Tiger Shark and the Bullshark. Counting my Horn Shark, it makes five. It's not bad, but there are still seven of them missing in my set...

My 2016 goal was to sort my 'keep' figures from my excess. Though this required renovating a room & building shelves - ran a month into 2017, but heck I'll be done by next weekend! It'll be satisfying, having not had a full display up in roughly 5 years!
