Just curious if there is a toy line that you used to collect but gave up on because it got too expensive and/or the rarity of some figures just discouraged you.

I set out to do a pretty complete G1 TF and RAH GI Joe collection. Then I realized I wasn't crazy about the later years, and it was taking up too much space, so I pretty much limited myself to the early years and what was on the original toons.
I don't know WHAT I am going to do if I ever run across someone's old aircraft carrier...

I started DIno Riders for some time and just got scared by the dozens and dozens of small parts. It's still a fantastic line, but I didn't feel pulled in enough to start chasing all these tiny little pieces!

I do Dino Riders as well and if you have the main stuff to complete the dinosaur, screw the rest. There are too many small bits for the fgiures. Also does dino riders need a good website showing every piece close up for every dinosaur adn every weird figure variant on color, super toy archives just isn' enough.
I did collect heroclix (they are kind of like a toy), but the company kept putting too many figures at ultra rare unique per set and some characters that were huge and desperately wanted at ultra rare unique only. That killed it for me.

Funny seeing Dino-Riders pop up with such frequency. I love this line and I've been collecting it seriously for a couple of years now. I've been very fortunate to purchase a few large lots to help amass a collection. It can be incredibly frustrating sometimes, because not only are there a lot of pieces, but the pieces on the armor to the dinosaurs are very, VERY fragile.
The problem I have is that I set out to do a toy line and then realize what it would take to get a "complete" collection. I haven't given up on Battle Beasts per se, but the prices on the Laser Beasts and all the Euro/Japan exclusives have gotten out of hand in the last couple of years (partially my fault, since I was the one who wrote the articles in Lee's Toy Review that appeared in 2003 and 2006, which probably raised the awareness level). I went from adding rare pieces every few months to now going years without adding anything, simply because I don't feel like spending whatever they go for now. The same goes for Thundercats. I was moving along at a clip, getting fortunate and finding a boxed Cat's Lair and a boxed Thundertank and a working Sword of Omens at reasonable prices, but now I'm left getting uber-rare stuff like Tongue-A-Saurus, Stinger with decent wings, Astral Moat Monster, Ben Gali's hammer, etc. I'm about to run into a similar problem with Dino Riders, as series 3 is incredibly hard to find. Everything I've found so far has come from large lots found locally through dealers (like Tinkerbeee!) or Craig's List and yard sales. I think I might have to settle for a complete series 1 and 2, which I'm just shy of doing (just need a Protoceratops and Kentrosaurus from Series 2 and I'm there).
The one line I did give up on cold turkey was new Star Wars stuff, which I collected with an intense passion for getting EVERYTHING Kenner/Hasbro made between 1995 and 2007 (taking me from sixth grade until I finished grad school). I just felt like it was overkill and Hasbro continually made older products obsolete. The challenge went from hunting for the figures to simply being able to afford to keep up, even if you bought everything at retail price. The great thing is that now I have more money, and more space, for vintage stuff. I do realize most people collected and gave up on that line, but I certainly stuck with it longer than I should have.

1) Hasbro Star Wars. I got tired of paying scalpers 300% or 400% for figures.
2)The Other World. Not clearly given up on it, yet. But I hardly bother looking for them any more.

The Other World has the compounded problem of nobody knowing what it is. You may just as easily find something in a random lot.

I never quite give up on most lines but I know some like Bone Age and Starcom I might pick one up here or there if I find it for a good price but I'm not even thinking of completing a full set. Then again I'm not a completest. If I don't finish a line it doesn't bother me that much.

Whew...I've actually given up on a lot of toy lines! I'll admit, collecting does take its toll on many levels. It's fun, but can eat you up if you ain't careful. In terms of vintage stuff, I have never really given up on a specific toy line, just faded in and out. I've always been kind of a variety guy so I never shoot for being a true "completist" or I'll just, seriously go nuts. Modern stuff...pfff...Star Wars since they cost too much and keep making newer, better versions of all the characters yet never make that ideal "perfect" version...ARGH! Marvel Legends got more and more expensive, plus you got less for your money. The build-a-figure was a stupid idea too. They should have just made straight-up larger figures as opposed to the annoying "collect to connect" routine. All they did was drive fanboys like me nutzo. The smaller Marvel Universe guys were cool. I loved 'em since they were in scale with G.I. Joe and Star Wars, but they kinda sucked in terms of quality and I stupidly realized this too late. Too many sticky and/or completely unusable joints, inconsistent sculpt quality, and pricing...oh, the pricing! Plus, very hard to find certain characters. Transformers...in general, I had too many. I really came to hate the more complicated ones (most movie characters, Alternators, select few from other lines) with lots of panels and intricate parts. They're supposed to be fun to transform, not a chore, Hasbro! Sheesh! I've gotten rid of a lot and plan to focus on the "classic" characters such as the versions from the Universe/Generations lines. I don't consider giving up on a toy line a bad thing, it's just a matter of perspective. Usually, I have darn good reasons to give up on anything, not just toys!

Vintage MOTU and Star Wars. They're both just too large of lines and too much money for me to collect them. I got a large lot of MOTU back int he day for cheap, but most of the figures have pretty loose legs. I'll eventually sell them on Ebay. I have some good ones and some not so good ones. All my Star Wars figures are in excellent condition, I'm not sure if I'm going to sell them or one day try to complete a basic loose set. But right now I've stopped buying them.

Are you talking MOC here? Because getting good-condition MOTU and Vintage SW figures on ebay really isn't all that expensive. The hard part is the few rares out there (like Randor), but I've seen loose complete MOTU figs in decent shape go for a few dollars.

No, loose. I know they're not super expensive, but I already collect so many lines, they don't fit in my budget. Plus they're both BIG lines which would take a long time to complete. I try to limit myself to $200 a month on toys, and I'm more into my vintage windups right now. But they were competing with JLU, SHS, Marvel Universe, Mighty Muggs, Mini Mates, vintage TOMY, vintage windups, Pixar Cars, Hot Wheels, vintage video game merchandise/memorabilia,Animated Spiderman, X Men, AD&D, the list goes on and on.. I also don;t have the room to display them anymore, and I'm running out of closet space for boxes. Plus, $10-20 for a figure here and there adds up fairly quick, since I would want all of them, with weapons and comics. Also, some of the rarer figures are that I see are going for much more than a few dollars. (depending what your definition of "few" is I guess), most of the later MOTU's are pretty steep ($20-40), the Meteorbs are usually around $15 apiece, Sorceress, Squeeze, Dragstor, Horde Trooper, Randor, etc. are all over $20 if you want a nice condition figure that will stand and has their weapons, Eternia is LOOT, and some of the Star Wars figures are over $20-30. (Blue Snagletooth?) I'm a completist and it would just take too long and too much money and too much room to invest in all the MOTU figures, all the vehicles, playsets, etc. Same with all the Star wars figures, vehicles and playsets, not to mention if I wanted to collect Power of the Force figures, or Droids and Ewoks (which I would).

I asked the question, but never answered it myself For me Mego WGSH has been on hold for awhile. I'm close to having all the Marvel characters but have no DC ones. I still need Lizard, Falcon, Human Torch, and Conan from the Marvel line. Cost and prevalence of re-pro parts have primarily been the reasons for not actively collecting.

I was really excited to collect War Planets, but it's just such a pain in the butt to find the Canadian stuff, that I have basically given up hope/put it to the side for now. I've started and sold off Dungeons and Dragons collections two times, and I am currently working on my third time. I never even came close to completing it once, because finding all of the accesories is such a pain really. This time around, I'm not forcing it, so I just take in whatever comes down the chute. Much easier and laid back than before and I'm enjoying it WAY more the third time around

Gotcha along those lines. I guess that I'm more thinking about the common stuff, which there is plenty of. 90% of the MOTU and SW collections seem to be REALLY common to me.

for me there are a small handful of expensive figures i still want from various lines. but mostly the expensive lines i was interested in are usually small lines and also i dont collect every figure from any line unless i actually think every figure looks cool.
for example i loved the blackhole as a kid, but as far as the toy line i have never thought any of the human figures were cool looking i only liked the robots mostly. so for years i wanted an old bob and was worried about the price, but luckilly before i ever found one the kubricks blackhole old bob and vincent came out. i actually think they are better looking and i got them while they were new and pretty cheap. then theres stuff like the humanoid figure. i think its pretty cool but nowhere near cool enough for the price so i dont even worry about it, in fact if i ever found one super cheap i would probably just sell it anyway because i just think its worth too much to have laying around here.

I used to try to collect the Corps, but there are way to many repaints of the same figures. And they have stupid names to boot. Gunner O'Grady. Fox. Come on. What is the Indian's name. I seem to remember it being kind of racist.

i also liked to pruchased new transformers toys, but hasbro has flooded the market with so many, especially re-using molds from other recent transformers lines and maybe changing color slightly. Now I just get ones that look like updated versions of the generation one figures and haven't been re-done a bunch of time

I found a good deal on some carded Mego Eagle Force figures ($3 each) so I started looking for others. Finding them in good condition was difficult and some people were asking ridiculous prices. Plus they're only 2 inches tall so they don't display well with the 3 3/4" figures. I kept one guy and traded the rest. I'm surprised they're not more popular especially among Mego collectors.

My Little Pony. I completely stopped collecting them because their high numbers discouraged me. There are so many MLP ponies out there we could build a whole army for North America if only they were alive. Someone who succeeded collecting all the MLP ponies characters and variants must have a palace just to store them- and sleep in the backyard shed. I'm warning potential MLP collectors here: as soon as you start collecting them, you soon become invaded with them. Consider it before you start.

I have just given up on Clash of the Titans and Battlestar Galactica. Im about to buy a house and have decided to gain some extra cash by weeding out the lines I just bought for the hell of it. I do feel sad giving up these guys but sometimes it just has to be done. Im sure in the future i'll get them back anyhow!!

I gave up on spiral zone. Wanted to start on that line but the rarity and prices was to much for me. Cool line though. Also gave up on MOTU which I had a short run at :P found my childhood collection and started buying what was missing, but then I realized that the last figures where far out of reach. MOTU is also a hard line to collect, never know what condition the ones you will get are in, considering the rubber bands etc.
Just to add to the bit about Star Wars, I think it's easy to give up on for example clone wars, where it's for example like 50 different clone troopers and they are also very expensive each. Don't think I will get the entire line, just started with this for because I like a lot of the characters.
Vintage as well probably, many variants some very expensive and finding non repro accessories are not easy these days.
