It seems figures are more and more expensive despite not being necessarily high in quality just because we pay for a NAME. Yes, we pay high prices for a name! No matter what the quality may be. Even if the "big name" has becomed cheaper. If we buy some dragon made in vinyl, we will pay something like 5$. But if that dragon wears the name "Star Wars", then ZWIP! You will see the price go over the roof. Imagine: now that Star Wars are popular, anything wearing its name will cost a fortune. It's just like Schleich. In my youth, Schleich was a pure european-made toy manufacture and their figures were expensive, but so high in quality! Since 2006, 80% of Schleich's parts belong to an USA bank. What did tthey do? They moved 80% of Schleich's production from Germany and Portugal to China. Their former flexible vinyl has been replaced by a cheap hard plastic. But they didn't lower their prices for that! No, we still pay big prices for them. Even if the plastic is cheaper than before. Even if it's labeled "Made in China" instead of "Made in Germany" or "Made in Portugal". We don't pay for quality anymore. We pay for the name "Schleich". Just like we keep paying big amounts for the name "Star Wars". Even if the quality may not be the same anymore... Just a name.

The upcoming last line of JLU 3 packs on Mattycollector are going to cost FIFTY DOLLARS if they decide to release them. (6 3 packs left) They said they've been selling so bad that's the only way they can justify it and had a poll asking fans of the line if they'd buy them at that price....That's 10 NEW figures out of the six 3 packs and 8 reissues of guys like Batman and Superman. 6 packs @ $50 apiece=$300, divided by 10 new figures= $30 per new figure.....

Im glad i stick mostly with vintage toys. Some of them may be expensive but at least i do get the joy of holding a toy that ive missed having after many years. Its a good feeling.

The only new toys that have even peaked my interest in the last few years are the cartoon Thundercats figures. I played it cool and got the Thundertank on sale for half price and lucked out findin a Panthro at the lower end of retail (6 bucks) and while they are nice toys, the quality just wasnt there (especially the Tank).

From what I can tell the new figures are more expensively packaged and highly detailed. Would this not affect the cost to produce the toy? When I used to buy toys from the store as a kid the stuff was on a cheap piece of cardboard with a cheap plastic bubble and the figures where usually stiff jointed hunks of plastic (which I loved, don't get me wrong). Also to take into consideration is that everything is so highly copyrighted and "movie/tv based" that the price is further driven up. Its most likely just the old story of supply and demand. Like an early post stated, more adults are buying toys now days and generally adults have more money to blow. Let's face it, a five year old these days has no interest in Star Wars lol.

Star Wars is still a really hot property for kids except now it's driven by The Clone Wars thanks to the show and movie. When you look in the toy aisle you can see which are geared towards the kids and adults. There's a slim chance a 6yr old is going to see the Vintage collection and gravitate towards it. Though the father buying a Vintage collection figure can buy his son a Clone Wars figure and they can bond over it. I actually think it's pretty cool.
Another dig to the modern toy lines, I just picked up a Tron Legacy 6" Deluxe Rinzler figure on clearance for $2. What a crappy figure! The articulation in the legs is awful, the ankles are loose to where he can barely stand and the Identity Discs dont fit in the hands. I should have saved my $2. This was the first figure from Legacy that I bought, up til now I've only been collecting the vehicles which are right on for the money.
